highly underrated ?

This movie has it all. All that plot about friendship and adventure moved me very much.
The songs are AWESOME. When the credits started rolling I was like...
'wow. one of the greatest movie i've ever seen' you can say i overrated or exaggerate it but... seriously, just 6.4?

This movie is, without a doubt one of my childhood favourites and watching it 13 years later I can still say I love it. Probably a bit more than it's worth because of the nostalgia, but it's still worth more than just 6. I've given it a 9.
It could have been slightly longer in my opinion but the dialogue is amazing between Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh and it's a big part of why I love rewatching it.

I had a very hard time getting through it, the songs were only ok, the voice-acting was weak, the plot was predictably weak (and the complete historical inaccuracies make it even worse). I know picking on historical inaccuracies in a kids film sounds picky, but when you make a period film don't conflict with what was historically true (and if you do for plot purposes make it very minor).

Also the thing that annoyed me the most, the natives at the time were not complete idiots, they had a culture far different from the Europeans, but them being conquered had much more to do with disease and the fact the smaller native tribes in the area having a very big issue with the Aztecs who had conquered them so they actually helped Spain. The Natives did NOT ever think that the Europeans were gods, this is a giant myth and it annoys me a great deal when movies like that play it as if that's how it was.

I understand they needed to for plot purposes, but that itself brings the plot down a whole other level, plus other minor historical inaccuracies done (and the fact they would not have survived that voyage on that life boat with no supplies, let alone make it to the Americas before Cortez)

That's not even going into how weak the plot and acting were.

I agree... Love watching this with my kids..

I watched this when I was pretty young and just watched it again for the first time a month or two ago.

It was just as amazing as I remembered it, if not more. I can't believe the bad reviews that it has.

I think it is one of the most underrated films of its kind.

Yes, extremely underrated. I gave it 10/10

10/10?

There's a reason this movie BOMBED at the box office: It sucked.

Two unlikeable lead characters, constantly bickering, so who gives a flying freak what happens to them.

And the animation is so horribly dated now.

Just painful on so many levels.

Well, not sure why don't like it then. It was my favorite cartoon in childhood and remains one of my favorite 15 years later.

This movie is totally underrated. Trivia says it was the only Dreamworks film not to profit? This is horrifying, it is super funny and well-paced. I love it and I'm sad that most people don't even know about it.

I'd say all the 2D DreamWorks films are underrated, or at least under-appreciated. I don't think I'd ever seen it all the way through before--my family never owned or rented it--but I just watched it yesterday and I thought it was quite enjoyable. The art/animation was great, and so was the music. I liked Elton John's work much better here than in The Lion King.

As for why this one did particularly bad when it came out, there are at least 3 reasons: First, it isn't Disney. Second, it had a lot of more popular competition (I don't remember the specifics). Third (and probably most important), I don't think people knew what to make of it. It's more risque than your average Disney/American/western animated movie, with the minor swearing and not-especially-subtle innuendos, but not risque enough to avoid being labeled a family film. It's also a lot different from their last film, The Prince of Egypt (which did quite well in theaters), and perhaps people were expecting something more like that. Whatever the case, word of mouth recommendation probably didn't go very well.

I'd give it a 6.8 (rated it 6 here). It was okay. I just re-watched it. The ending was a letdown.Better ending = better rating. ---Lincoln Lee: I lost a partner.Peter Bishop: I lost a universe!
