Movie?

Do you think it would be a safe bet to create a post-apocalyptic genre film based on this game? It would seem like it could possibly be a hit much like Mad Max 1, 2, and 3... Just a thought...

reply

I'd love to see a Fallout movie, but those who don't know what Fallout is will probably only say it's a ripoff of Mad Max.

Then again, they did get a lot of their ideas from Mad Max.

reply

True, they did, and people would.

Second question: Is there any way to get the intro movie as a separate video clip that you can play independently from the game itself? I was wondering if there was a way to get the sound of Ron Perlman doing the intro.

reply

You could try using Fraps, though I'm not sure if it works with all games. www.fraps.com

"Fallout" movie:

15 minutes long.
And you can download it from authors site:
www.willjoines.com

This is the only way to obtain it, because i seriously doubt, that anyone have released this movie at DVD, VHS or whatever else.

It weights around 100 MB.

i am currently working on a film based version of fallout and would be nice to use the game intro but i don't think ya could really, i think if ya change it to film you should try and make ur own stuff and use the the wording from it, i'm basing mine on fallout 2 not 1 because of the better storyline lol number 1 was too short for a film i got it half done and hoping to send it to a movie company soon to see if they will want it which is not likey but if they do way-hey i would love it, mad max is not really a thing to base it on because on its a downunder and fallout is american lol and two tho it has the same basic storie and same type of citys and towns it has too little technology compared with fallout, if wants to see my verison so far plz just ask i would be happy to show u all

reply

Hey I'd be really interested in seeing that! Sounds like a cool project! Do you have a website up where I can find out more?

My friend Ethan is planning a film loosely based on Fallout. It's a post-apocalyptic vigilante trolling the wasteland, etc etc. The trailer can be found here -> http://www.perniciousparadise.com/madnationtrailer.mp4

There's also a forum about it with screen shots at No Mutants Allowed -> http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14503

I saw mxpxseth11's friend's trailer for "Mad Nation." It was good visually but the audio needs work.

Good idea! get Uwe Boll on the phone, ha ha just kiddin'

But who would direct this?

James Cameron for the characters, Ridley Scott for the setting and environment. Too bad they couldn't have done this in their golden years though, they'll never do this underground stuff anymore.

I happen to know that Hideo Kojima has refused allowing Uwe Boll anywhere near his games, and I doubt that Valve or Bethesda would let him use their licenses.

Being a fan of Fallout, I watched the movie: a Boy and His Dog.
It had Don Johnson as the lead and a talking dog, Pretty weird movie though

i read about Uwe Ball as well. I hope that he gets realy close to making it but at the last miniute pulls out so that Fallout will have a little more notice for a movie version of it.

paul vernhoven should do it, he did 'starship troopers' and 'robocop'

I know this sounds strange, but I reckon Robert Rodriguez could make a go of it, just as long as someone's with him to help fatten out the script (i.e. the way he collaborated with Frank Miller on "Sin City".) Rodriguez himself might not write the best screenplays/scripts, (hence the need to collaborate with someone who can do a good script on the Fallout world), but I reckon his action-filmmaking skills used in stuff like "Desperado" and "Sin City", would work well in the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout.

I mean (to whoever has ever played either game), who HASN'T ever had a Desperado moment, where your Vault Dweller has walked into the middle of a horde of enemies, whupped out his weapons, and sent criticals (and Mutants) flying left right and centre?

^On a different note, like the previous poster has said, Paul Verhoeven's treatment would be interesting too. Considering the production design on "Robocop", "Total Recall" and "Starship Troopers", it'd be interesting to see how he would create locations like the Military Base and the Master's lair.

^Good teaser poster. I liked it!

Dude you are so right, Verhoeven was born to direct any post apocalyptic satire like this.

There were quite a few references to that movie in the Fallout games... by the way Don Johnson refered to the dog as "Dogmeat" one time.

reply

I think it would work better as a television show.

reply

Yeah, I have thought so as well. Make a show about a group of vault 13 dwellers being sent off after the water chip. They may end up splitting up (one could go renegade) and different people would encounter different denizens of the wastes.

I've never actually given a **** what he does with games licenses, but that comment just made me a hater 3 times over. AAaaaaaaaarrrrrrghhhhgh!

There is already a movie that seems to take place in the fallout universe. And in fact features a charicter from both fallout 1 and 2. It's called a boy and his dog. The boy being Vic and the dog being Blood.

When making a Fallout movie one has to consider that in essence Fallout is alot like a western (spagehtti westerns not the american westerns). The visual style for a movie like this should be like one of Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy. You have to capture that gritty, decayed, lawless, depressing post-apocaliptic future feel. Fallout is also very appealing for its retro-future theme. I'll explain. Look back at how the people back in the 30's, 40's, and 50's saw the future (the world's fares and that type of sci-fi pulp comic book thing). Familiarize yourself and understand how they thought back then everything was going to look like in the future. Ok now add one hundred years of technological evolution based on what they saw, add ten years of war and destruction to that, and then add eighty years of decay and radiation. While sticking to the architecture portraid in the game.

Just beginning to plan a film like this is very expensive. Its a project that should be treated as something the size of King Kong but with the faithfullness of Sin City. The story is so long that it will have to be cut and stripped to its bones. It is a hard game to adapt and theres more of a possibility of it being done wrong than right.

The only possible way to get a good movie out of this is to have filmmakers that ultimately love the story and the mtyhology that is Fallout. The type of people who will know how to incorporate the heart and soul of the game with visual style and creativity. For the movie to be a success it has to do to the movie world what it did with the gaming world. The same captivation one felt when playing the game must be felt when watching the movie.

That is why I think no popular director should even touch this baby. Leave it to the fans that love it. But fans with vision. With style. Leave it to an unknown that loves the game for what it was and understands it perfectly. Its a long shot . . . but I know people like this exist.

The problem is that these people generally stay hidden. They don't strive forward hard enough in the unforgiving movie business.

I speak as a film student/die hard Fallout fan. I'll do my best to strive harder than anyone out there and hopefully be involved in a Fallout production some day. Until then I hope this project isnt handed over to the wrong people for the wrong reasons at the wrong time . . .

reply

well, that clip linked above was very interesting. Too bad they couldn't do more.

A Boy and His Dog was a pretty good movie for the Fallout feel.

Anyone reading this thread should look at a movied called "Six String Samurai". yes, I know how it sounds, just trust me. It is totally different but just as weird as a Boy and his dog. If you are here, you won't be disappointed.

albertoseccarelli what you just said about a fallout movie is pure gold you know your *beep* nice to know theresdecent folk out there.

reply

Agree albertoseccarelli. The setting of Fallout is very distinct and requires a lot of attention to detail. Fallout 1&2 have enough material to cover several films, there is just too much terrain to get across. You would have to cut a lot if you want to squeeze all the locations into one film (Reno and the Nuclear Plant alone would be enough for films of their own). That's why maybe it would work really well as a series. Personally, it doesn't matter to me all that much if it follows the story of the Vault Dweller specifically, as long as the setting is right and the story can stand on its own (obviously it shouldn't stray too far from the game, there should still be vaults/mutants/desert cities etc.) If people like Joss Whedon (Firefly) or Alfonso CuarĂ³n (Children of Men) were involved, I could see this turn out to be a great series. Problem is, it would definitely have to push the boundaries a lot in terms of censorship. What made the games so great is the feeling of realness that is in the dialogue and themes in general. People out in the wasteland don't behave like your typical PC diznee character and do swear and pop a cap here and there, as you do. It's really sad to watch something that deals with real serious issues and extreme characters and it's toned down to the extent that it really screws up the immersion. Like in Battlestar Galactica for instance, you'd have episodes upon episodes dealing with vote rigging, suicide bombing, racism and such and then you have to suffer through characters "fracking" each other. Who the hell says that? Is this school or what?

Fallout could work so well as a series on its own with a bunch of movies thrown in, the way Star Trek managed it.

reply

do you guys realize that the fallout series is inspired by so many post apoc films that were already made. The mad max series, boy and his dog, dr strangelove, westworld and a lot more. making a fallout game would seem almost redundant of these films. but with the right director it could be done, but will be very very challenging. for me they have to get the core of the series just right, and thats the dark humor.

reply

Some one like Peter Jackson or Guillermo del Toro could probably pull it off. Not so sure about John Carpenter these days.

reply

Does anyone know what movies out there are like Fallout? Besides A Boy and his Dog.

reply

Ok, I know this is an old post, but for anyone else who might be interested:

20 Years After
Damnation Alley
Logan's Run
The TV series Ark II
And while I hate to mention it, Waterworld was essentially the same concept set at sea.
