another poser kid who knows nothing about punk. It wasnt either. It was either Iggy Pop and the Stooges or New York Dolls. Both beat sex pistols and ramones by a long shot. plus the sex pistols were posers.

New York Dolls 1972-1976
The Stooges 1966-1974

How can we expect anyone to listen if we are using the same old voice? We need a new noise.

Hank Williams

reply

Hank williams was punk as *beep* way before any of those bands

There is no definitive answer to this question (even though its certainly not the Ramones or the Sex Pistols). However, I would say the first punk band to embody what I value in Punk Rock is Crass all the way back in 77.

The sex pistols were nothing short of a boy band created to promote a fashion label.

reply

Iggy and the Stooges were cranking out punk tunes in the late 60's early 70's. Before that, probably the MC5 from Detroit. That's for punk "sound", as for punk "attitude" I'm sticking with Hank Williams. :)

reply

you don't know anything about the Sex Pistols man... Sid Vicious was most definitely a poser and a fashion icon.. But the rest of them were pretty damn straight-up, Johnny Rotten in particular. Everyone thinks hes a sellout, but he didn't care what other punks thought of him. Isn't punk all about non-conformity? So why should he even have to conform to the whole DIY philosophy? The music style was definitely punk, and thats all that counts. And johnny rotten was not faking it-- he was poor and diseased his whole childhood.

The Ramones, on the other hand, were total posers. :)

reply

You're all wrong. Frank Sinatra created punk.

The Velvet Underground influenced alot of punk. Lou Reed couldn't sing.

watching the city spin beneath, I couldnt help but feel like an outsider

I HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend reading a few books (i just read em myself can't put em down. Has alotta stuff that i didn't previously know and i'm usually pretty up on my punk rock news/history)

PUNK: the whole story (possibly my fav outta the 3)
Please kill me: An oral history of punk
Pretty Vacant

They go through the ENTIRE punk movement.
Basically (as im sure has been stated previously on this thread)
Everything was kinda co-dependant and influenced everything else.
but the 'true' punk movement started by Velvet underground/mc5 lead to NY dolls and Iggy and the stooges.
Malcolm macleran saw (and managed for a brief time) the NY dolls.
Took the whole idea of like a basically talentless (cant' play/cant sing) group back to england and started shopping around for a singer (as glen matlock and steve were already wanting to do a band).
So I guess you could say the punk movement started in the states in new york.
but it would never have gotten out of select new york circles (namely art circles, which is how patti smith got involved) without the UK.
because the sex pistols were the first really big punk band (mostly due to their infamy due to their song content/political tones).
This is what brought punk to a wider audience and let it thrive and grow.

final summation
punks roots came from new york. england/uk was the food that nourished it and allowed it to thrive.

I created punk, back in 900BC. See, there was some kid on a corner in Greece, and he couldn't play the lute worth a lick. So he just strummed away playing the only thing he knew, which was the root and the 5th. But, what he did know, was he could move that fingering pretty much anywhere, and it would sound good. So, he did this little I-IV-V progression, and of course, I was pissed off because they just fire me from the bathhouse for skimming money off the top, but I figured, hey, these guys are rich, they can afford it. So yeah, anyway, I happed upon this kid as I was kicking rocks down the road, lifting up my toga to anyone who gave me flack, and I starting singing lyrics about the man holding me down, the government sucking, and my boss being a jerk. After some people tossed some drachmas, we went to the local bar and got drunk, and started some fights.

Ah, those were the years.

That's funny-"all the way back in 77" considering the NY Dolls, Stooges, MC5 and The Ramones were on the scene and making records a lot earlier than 77.
Now I feel old!!

Shhh......don't tell my husband I'm in love with Jason Segel

reply

I stand by what I said. I understand that these bands were playing a style of music that was labeled as Punk Rock, however, my statement was "the first punk band to embody what I value in Punk Rock".

How is someone suppose to be a 100 percent anarchist in a capitol world. Heres the problem is that you cant expect people who want anarchy to be the United States to accually be 100 percent. The problem is they have to support it for now if they want to survive. They also want to take down capatlism and if they want to take it down them killing themselves isnt really going to help. So obviously them being a 100 percent arachist isnt logical to any stand point at all. I mean if they truley wanted to fight for this they would have to get enough people together and start a revolution....if they die there they will accually be dying for a cause (sort of).... so yeah over all you can't expect anarchist to be 100 percent...they can support there message and convince people to do it they are raising awarness so they can finnally start there revolution!!!!!

(just so you know i dont beleive in anarchy because first off the people who want anarchy are the exact people exploit it)

Overall could anarchy work? YES, the problem is you need people to be good by nature and if theres a silent agreement to everyone its possible it could work. But even if people didn't exploit this fact there are so much other things... first off is doctors...whose going to want to train to be a doctor with out capitolism? Not many people (same reason communism fails though communism COULD work but it hasnt and will almost always fail but im not going on about that) Then if someone did want to be a doctor who would want to teach them. There needs to be some sort of rewards and some sort of currency for trade. Once currency start capotilism starts. But in theory if everyone was good by nature and we could get people just training others to be doctors and stuff because they WANTED to be one and the others wanted to train them. Its possible anarchy is possible. but there are so many more problems....

but overall that is off topic is that these anarchist can't be anarchist because they have to survive. But they can help spread the word to start a revolution i think thats what this whole thing is about...

but obviously its not REALLY about it

its about the fashion and being cool...

did u guys not hear a word of stang87 onbiously he created it :-p haha man even if no one else acknowledge your joke i thought it was halarious!

(fyi why are you guys arguing over who created punk...umm who the *beep* cares?)

whats up with this major stereotyping....if you enjoy the style of the "punk" clothing...then go for it...

others shouldnt call u a poser for you wearing it...if you want to then do it... but just because you do that then dont belittle other people....

punk can be described in many ways....

Clothing
music
mindset

but who cares why are you labeling...just chill and not argue

The NEW YORK DOLLS!!!!

Neither. This film sort of started it if you think about it. Sex Pistols weren't TRUE punks and the Ramones were a bunch of fratboy sissies. This movie is more in alignment with the nature of punkism as an art. Steve-O is like the prodigal punk. He is not of the system, he f-cks the system!! SLC PUNK is one of the greatest, most realistic movies I have ever seen.

it doesn't matter who started it, it's who's doing it best right now!

that said, it goes without saying that the sonics were one of the first punk rock bands and the whole seattle sound around that time (60-68) was punk, before the word really existed. the argument will never be settled man.

reply

The magazine Legs McNeil worked for/ran called 'Punk' that popularized the term as the music they covered was *beep* that played at CBGB's and Max's.
Music wise?
Probobly Iggy Pop and The Stooges, or New York Dolls, or The Velvet Underground.

Discharge, end of story!

The Who, Velvet Underground, MC5. I also think some rock bands like Jefferson airplane,Blue Cheer, and Sabbath(not the bluesy stuff)had an influence with their heavily amplified stuff. just a thought
