Done too soon?

I watched this for the first time last night, and liked some of the touches (Captain Amazing puts on glasses nobody recognises him, and the gimmicky gangs). But I began to think maybe it was done too soon. If it had been done now, with the wealth of superhero films to riff on and spoof, could it have been better? (Whether you like it or not).

You know what I really hate though? People who write sigs that look like the message carries on :)

Problem is...if they did it now they would never get that cast. ...Or if they did, they might not be as good now.

The magic of home video means it doesn't matter when they made it for me.

the movie was just way ahead of its time, it came out when comic books weren't mainstream, it basically mocked the genere and turned it on its head, the movie basically spit in the face of Batman and Superman, (the in joke with the glasses, and Lance Hunt being a billionaire)

People just didn't get it, they didn't get that Batman and Superman were not sacred topics, and they didn't get that people are allowed to make fun of them and that is ok in the comic world.

Great movie, oh well this kinda thing happens, look at Its a Wonderful Life when it first came out critics audiences just didn't get it, and they hated the movie, and now its stand the test of time and its a shining example of great cinema, its a time capsule of an era gone by that we all long for.

ahead of its time? LOL, did you never watch the Batman series with Adam West and Burt Young?

This movie was pretty underwhelming when I first saw it and after seeing it again on cable TV I still feel the same way. Paul Reubens was totally wasted as a character and should have been given Ben Stiller's role instead.

I was just telling someone that this movie came out 10 years too soon. I saw this on its opening day in '99, and I wasn't too impressed with it, but I laughed more than most people in the theater just because I've read thousands of comic books and actually got all of the jokes. But when I saw this again about a year ago, I enjoyed it a lot more, and thought that it seemed to anticipate the excesses of the super-hero films that followed it. This film would probably go down better with modern audiences just because they're far more familiar with super-hero cliches than they were in '99, when the only super-hero movies anyone had seen were the Superman movies and the Burton-Schumacher Batman films.

I agree that this film was ahead of its time and when you think about it in relation to the alternative 'superhero' films these days like Kick Ass, Super and Defendor (all great films) which take normal people and make them costumed vigilantes then Mystery Men even predates that idea!.

When this came out superhero movies were pretty much dead thanks to Batman & Robin, Barb Wire, Tank Girl, and Steel so the idea of a parody wasn't very appealing to the general public. It's ironic though considering that
X-Men came out the following year and restarted the trend. I firmly believe that if this had been made in the mid 00's or late 00's it would have done better, but as somebody else said the cast would have been very different.

Exactly! The glasses thing when roy says that Lance takes them off when he transforms and shoveler says "thats ridiculous how would he see?" is probably the best line of the whole movie for me.

Then you get the blue raja not using knives now would be much funnier with audiances knowing people like batman wont kill.

Evil must be punished. Even in the face of armageddon I will not compromise in this.

Spot-on, this film was sooooo ahead of it's time, very underrated. I'd be put on-par with Kick-Ass to be honest.

You just used two examples of words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. My sig is concerned with the current trend of using one word in the place of another when they are spelled differently and have different meanings.
