Rate Larry Clark's Films

Only his features, of course...

Sadly, I haven't seen a single film by him (yet) and am VERY interested in your opinion of his work...

Please rate the films you've seen (out of 10, or 4-stars system, or 'from best to worst'), post/add your comments, recommendations, etc. ANY feedback very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks for your participation.

Filmography (features only):

The Smell of Us (2014)
Marfa Girl (2012)
Wassup Rockers (2005)
Ken Park (2002) 7/10
Bully (2001)
Another Day in Paradise (1997)

Thank you very much for your rates. Much appreciated, as always. That was really helpful for an absolute beginner with Clark like me.

"I used to hate his movies, but as you see I changed my mind..."

And that's quite 'promising'. I just watched first 10 minutes of Ken Park (short clip only) and was pleasently surprised. It's intriguing (to say the least).

What would you say is his 'best' effort among those 4 you saw (I'm assuming it's a duel between Kids and Ken Park)? Thanks again.

If you start with Ken Park it's more likely that you won't see anything else by Clark. It's his most extreme movie and most people seem to hate it. I'd say Kids is his best movie. Another Day is his most mainstream film but it's fun (and Woods is amazing). Bully his most simplifying view on teenagers, but it still speaks the truth in atime where movies like American Pie dominate teen cinema. Ken Park is a personal cause for the first time Clark really seems to like his characters. I'd say it's his most optimistic film, but then again, that's my opinion...

Wassup Rockers - N/A
Ken Park - 3/10
Bully - 9/10
Another Day in Paradise - 8/10
Kids - 7/10

Even though ADIP is my favorite movie of all time, I gave Bully a higher rating because I think it's just directed better. Every time I watch it I find new little things I never noticed before about the way Larry shoots scenes. It's very beautifully done, direction-wise.

Ken Park? Just eugh. I am not impressed with Harmony. And Larry should stick to directing.

Bully (2001) -10/10 (I really didn't expect how absolutely hilarious and so gloriously sleazy and depraved this movie was going to be)
Kids (1995) - 7/10

Haven't seen Ken Park or Wassup Rockers but from what I remember all would have to be 9 / 10.

Then in terms of quality overall

1. Kids (1995)
2. Another Day in Paradise (1997)
3. Bully (2001)

Amoral, immoral, exploitative, irresponsible - maybe.
Totally vital cinema of its period (especially Kids) - without a doubt.

3. Bully (good, disturbing movie)
4. Ken Park (also good and underrated)
5. Wassup Rockers (actually kind of stupid but not too bad; not as real as his other movies)
6. Teenage Caveman (not worth seeing)

Kids 5/10, This one just didnt pull me in at all.
Bully 7/10, Good but average to me,
Another Day In Paradise 10/10, A masterpiece that I can watch over and over.

#1 Bully: true story and the bigger budget helped the presentation
#2 Guess Paradise, again big budget, good presentation, good acting
#3 Kids, but only good at a certain age, lower budget and low replay value
#4 Ken Park, pretty low budget and probably will only watch it once.

#5
#6 never seem them, but I heard teenage caveman was a joke,,,,,,

Sadly do you people know how many 18 year old and pratically children that man boned,,,,,,,,,,,,,In Florida he was off the chain,,,,,,,,felt bad for some of them

Teenage Caveman..how come this one is left out of the list?

Wassup Rockers (2005)I havent seen this one.

Ken Park (2002)I heard so much about this film and how disturbing it was, when i watched it i couldnt figure out why it was band. i was bored......VERY bored. I thought it be more hardcore then the others the way people spoke about this film. Not to mention i have seen alot of independent films that other countries have producess....AND or watched the commentary......which can sometimes be more disturbing then the film :| 3/10

Bully (2001) This is probably one of my favorite films of all time. Its brilliantly done. I give it 10/10.

Another Day in Paradise (1997)I want to see

Kids (1995) This is another film i highly enjoyed, one of my top films as well.Bully was better. 9.8/10

Teenage Caveman......This movie is.....well a piece of crap HOWEVER. Its interesting to watch, if its late a night and your bored and it happens to be on....which it seems to be on alot. therefore i give it a 5.9/10

"Teenage Caveman..how come this one is left out of the list?"

According to IMDb it's a TV movie. I usually don't list TV works in this series of threads (for practical reasons, most people are NOT familiar with TV works of most directors...sad, but true).

BUT anyone is ALWAYS welcome to add their rates/comments/opinions on films which are not listed at my initial posts (there'a always a chance I overlooked something).

So thank you very much for your feedback on this one and on the rest. Much appreciated, as always.

Kids - 7/10 Exciting, visceral and stunning.

Bully - 6/10 A great follow up to Kids but just doesn't quite pack as much punch.

Another Day in Paradise - 4/10 Started off average but instead of getting better it got worse. Veering on boring come the last reel.
