Originally adult show?

I adored this show when I was in Middle School-after 'Gargoyles' got crappy, this one took off. There were some eye-rolling, corny moments during some episodes, but the animation involving San Francisco/Berkeley was awesome, and some of the storylines got brutally serious. Namely, the Rath/Chontra ones, and the ones involving Ja-Kal's family. I remember getting so involved during those episodes--literally glued to my seat!--while my kid brothers went 'Hunh'? I was very, very sad when I found out there wasn't going to be any more episodes, especially since I wanted them to get darker.

I just found out, via Wikipedia, that 'Mummies Alive' was supposed to be an adult cartoon! It also made me wince finding out that the same writers who destroyed the 'Gargoyles' series, Eric and Julia Lewald, were in charge of writing and producing this series. Talk about ruining a great assignment.

Personally, I would adore 'Mummies Alive' coming back with an adult theme, especially since it's target audience in 1997 are now young adults. I feel like they could explore more violent elements that the show hinted at--how Armon lost his arm, the anguish Rath felt leaving Chontra and her bitterness at him, more crazy gods, and maybe Presley could grow up too.

Hell, I feel like writing this to 'Adult Swim' now! Anyone with me?

No way this would be made today!
In the post9/11 its unlikely our viewers would want to watch things that glamourize or glorify mideastern culture.
This was made in 1997 when 9/11 was 4 years away.
Like I said no way this would be made today!

they were superpowered Egyptian mummies, not suicide bombers

What Is Your Pleasure, Sir?

You're kidding right? Because I remember watching YuGiOh and it had a lot of glorifying Egpyt-ness in it. That junk was airing clear after 9/11. And it's still wildly popular.

Shoot, Tutenstein was another Egypt-promoting series that didn't start airing till 2003. That show was so filled with pro-Egyptness, including a refreshing stance on Egyptian Gods (didn't make them evil freaks). That show was on for 5 years!

I think most people are able to wrap their head around the fantasy concept of Mummies and Ancient Egypt culture. Ancient Egypt and Mummies =/= "Anti American" Terrorists.

If MA was rebooted for kids it would make it because kids don't give a *beep* about fears against "mideast culture."

If this show was made for Adults, then the Adults it would be aimed at would generally be the kids who watched it the first time in 97. They wouldn't give a rats ass about average joe american's fears of anything "mideasstern." They'd also have the money to buy any and all merchandise that strikes their fancy for the show. And everything boils down to money. If MA proved profitable tv execs wouldn't give a *beep* about "fears of glorifying the mideast."

That, and also done by writers like Bruce Timm & Paul Dini.

Back then there were more adult themes in kids cartoons. Batman the Animated series cut it close with what they presented. This show was awesome shame its not talked about more
