I have to disagree with Moore

Anbody else ever question why is it a bad thing that these companies are giving work to poor countries. Constantly the media says that the workers work long hours and do extremely hard work...but noone is forcing them to work. If companies like Nike didnt hire the labour from these countries would those people be any better off? I believe if i was in the same situation i would rather work 12 hours a day than starve to death, wouldnt you? The only reason why the media and michael moore are trying to brainwash everyone is because if we start sending are money to poor countries so that they can do labour for us because it would hurt our strong economy. If we give them the jobs they no longer starve to death and our unemployment rate goes up and less ppl can afford their suvs and plasma screen tvs.

The big companies give work to poor countries not out of the kindness of their heart but to pay them less and to prevent us Americans from working for higher wages and making a living.

America *beep* sucks!

Since when has the government forced any bosses to pay their employees a living wage---you got it backwards,my man--it's the workers themselves who have had to go on strike historically to even get the bosses not only to pay them a decent living wage, but even to get decent benefits. SO basically you're saying that as a worker, I don't have the right to demand that my boss should pay me a decent living wage, especially if my working for his company is contributing to him making more than enough profits to afford it? That's some real bulls**t, and you know it. As usual, you anti-government right-wing nuts don't know what the hell you're talking about, but if dosen't matter so long as you can whine, complain and bash the government about any damn thing.

KGreene asks, "Since when has the government forced any bosses to pay their employees a living wage..."
KG, it is called "Minimum Wage." It is indeed a law. The govt does indeed force a boss to pay you a certain wage. Talk about not know your facts, LOL.

Please learn to scrutinise both what you read & your response to it.

A minimum wage is in no way a living wage.

I hope you now see the folly of your conflation.

This is the EXACT argument southern plantation owners used to justify enslaving blacks...."Well, over here they get to work and feel good about themselves and we feed, cloth and shelter them! Sure is better then living in the jungle! They are better off as slaves!".

reply

That's not the same argument at all. Slaves had no choice but to work, where as the people employed by American companies can quit at any time.

By them getting the jobs instead of Americans, our unemployment rate is higher than it should be. Additionally, there is the moral question: is it fair to work them for super low wages so that Nike can have a bigger profit margin?

But to be fair, you bring up a good point--super low wages are better than no wages. I do think corporate America is taking advantage of these poor people, but I guess at least it's some money. And, the other moral situation--is it right to deny work to people from another country just so we can keep it to ourselves?

Not taking a side here... just thinking about the issues a bit.
