'I'm gonna go wash something'

Even the first time I saw this movie, my reaction to that line was; "Are you f...ing kidding me? What year is this?"

That's the message for women in 2000? ...they stay home, get pregnant and wash things?
Somehow Disney can even attempt to screw up their non-formulaic movies with stupid bits of propaganda. Mrs. Pacha is a decorative non-entity.

Yeesh. Calm down. I always thought that it was just an excuse to get away from the situation that was frustrating her. Anyway, are women not allowed to wash things now?

reply

My wife cleans when she's stressed or angry at something. That's all the "cleaning something" was meant to imply.

The way that she delivered that line was so hilarious and funny. I thought she was the coolest pregnant woman ever. Her personality seem so tough and strong and you can tell she wears the pants in the relationship. I'm a woman and I didn't think it was offensive at all. I laughed very hard and I think being a mother is something to be proud of. If your children are raised right, your house is clean and your husband/family is happy then that's something to be proud of. I'm not the type of girl who wants to be a mother but that doesn't mean I should go putting other women down who want a family... same for you.

reply

I dunno if she wears the pnts in the relationship, Pacha doesn't really strike me as "whipped", but he definitely respects her enough to let her do her own thing. I'd say they're about 50/50.

*pants. I swear typing these things on an iPhone is frustrating...

at the time of the civilization that it was supposed to be set in, that's what women did. it's not right but then it was appropriate. i'm a feminist and a woman and i didn't interpret it that way. at most i cynically thought 'of course she will, pacha's probably not going to do it.' she's stuck on a mountain and finding physical activity difficult, the dishes are there and she needs something to get her annoyance out on. it does make sense for that situation

Can't really trust people who can only count to potato, can you?

As a woman I definitely did not find that line to be offensive or sexist in any way! A lot of women (and possibly some men, I don't know) clean when they're stressed because it calms them down. It's a way of focusing your stress and anger and feeling in control at that point. Plus scrubbing something works out a lot of frustration! So no, I think it was just a funny line, she definitely wasn't the typical sexist stereotype that you're making her out to be!

I don't know why everyone chimed in and went against you on this one, OP. I thought you had a good point. It was a line that stood out to me as dated, too.

Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

I definitely took it not as 'women love cleaning!' but as 'heavily pregnant lady in nesting mode is stress-cleaning' which is, having been pregnant and around a lot of pregnant friends, something that can hit even the most egalitarian of women. I'm a hyper progressive liberal feminist, and I sometimes stress-bake.
Every other facet of her character is strong, in control, and intelligent. BTW, the character has a name, it's Chicha.
