Julia's Mom

I hated the way she encouraged Julia to marry Glen - I mean, shouldn't she care more for her daughter's emotional happiness rather than be like "You're going to dump Glen for the wedding singer? Honey, Glen's got money, you're going to marry him and everything is going to be fine." She was a bit selfishly misguided in that scene.

Unfortunately, that's how some people's minds work.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, that's how a lot of people think now-a-days which is sad.

While perhaps unfortunate, the reality is her mother wanted her daughter to be comfortable and not have to live in a state of lack. She understood that although her heart desired Robbie, Glen was likely a more practical approach long-term. Worst case scenario, they divorce and Glen has to pay her, allowing her to afford a relatively comfortable lifestyle. With Robbie, she would have spent maybe 5-10 wonderful years loving him, but the love would ultimately fizzle, leaving her with very little financial gain.

Her thinking was that marriage, perhaps like school, is an investment; sometimes it's very painful to go through the process, but the hope is that in the end, you'll come out ahead.

Although this may sound egregious and terrible, I'm just implying that this is the world we live in, and it's how Julia's mother most likely processed things in her mind.
