Why does everyone hate this film?

I liked "The Velocity of Gary": I found it profound and touching.
Am I the only one?

No, You're not the only one. I watched this film for the first time last night, and was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was really quite beautiful and sweet, not overdone or any of those other things the reviewers accuse it of being. I hope it gets released on DVD sometime soon.

Yes, this movie is fun. Its a fun trip along a dirty street, somewhat akin to last exit to brooklyn. Only not as much fun.

I love the deaf country queen, the porn star, the donut girl and gary.

Oh the frivolous lives they all lead. And please dont call it dull.

I love the scope and breadth of the certina, concertina and filermina.

The rabid onstenance and greciousness overtly funderfied by a mondo-verbatim.

Encore, Barrage, Eureka!

Haven't we met before? Weren't you the one who damned me to hell?

i liked this film, it was affecting and i think that thomas jane's perfomance was crazy unbelievably good.

i think it's because this film is about *beep*

I liked this film, the love this "dysfunctional family" had for one another was actually quite touching.

I thought it was really good. I think what makes people not like it is perhaps that it makes them feel uncomfortable. You know, that whole double standards thing of it being ok for girls to make out with each other, but not guys.

It's a great movie - more need to be made that cover bisexuality and alternative lifestyles so realisticly and with such compassion.

reply

I agree that there needs to be more movies about bisexuality, alternative lifestyles and living with AIDS, and I think The Velocity of Gary had its heart in the right place, but I still think it was a poor, cliched and unconvincing film. Vincent D'Onofrio and Thomas Jane did their best, but Salma Hayek's incredibly annoying overacting really ruined it for me.

I think 'people' hate this film because they are uncomfortable with it's content. It really is a shame that we all can't just get past what society says we should all agree on or enjoy. I'm still not sure why someone would watch this film and NOT know the point of it and end up being offended by it. Dislike it for the acting(D'Onofrio and others were excellent), dislike it for the direction or scenery, but if you listen to the message, it was a really good movie. True to the period. The message was well perceived.

I wasn't uncomfortable with the concept at all. I rented it based on a combination of the wonderful cast, the concept and the fact that I normally like off-beat independent films with quirky and bizarre characters. I wanted to like the movie...I really did. But I found it to be boring and I guess I just didn't "get" it. Unfortunately I saw it several years ago so I can't be more specific as to what about it bored me, that I didn't get, etc. I just remember watching about half of it, not being able to get into it, and finally turning it off in boredom and disappointment.

You can't be said to be wrong I guess, but there indeed are difficult semi-crazy people out there, not too well educated, just like this. Maybe this is the only way to show complete three-way bisexuality in a Hollywood (or indie) movie: make characters and their world interesting, but foreign, sad, dirty, pathetic---and a million miles a way from "people like us." I would bet that the same dynamics in nicer houses and better jobs exist in real life more than one would think. (No, I am not myself in such a trio!)

I never heard of anyone that wasn't amazed by this film until today. I was following links on Chad Lindbergh's page, when I came across this title. I saw it years ago and was just astounded by what a great film it is.

I guess it's just a case of different strokes for different folks... to make a weak pun on the subject matter.

I barely remember the movie, but I remember that I didn't care for it because it wandered on aimlessly after killing the most interesting character, which was the deaf girl.

You mean boy. You do realize that was a boy right?
