Why does he keep claiming to be 'the best pilot ever'

How is someone the best pilot ever? He's piloting a single engine plane. It's not like it's an advanced fighter jet. I don't understand why he feels so confident in possessing this title.

Well, he didn't say he was the "best pilot ever". He said "I am the best god damned pilot you'll ever meet!", which just might be true as most people don't meet pilots. Just sayin'

Also consider that he was able to get his airplane down in one piece during a major storm and they both walked away. Besides the fried electronics, the only other damage was crumpled landing gear from hitting a rock on the beach.

Later, with some inspiration, salvaged parts and Robin's help, they were able to make the plane airworthy again and take off (despite being under attack from pirates). Despite being injured by a mortar, he was able to give Robin the information she needed to land the aircraft and upon landing in more-or-less one piece, they both walked away yet again.

I think that says something about his skill as a pilot. I could be wrong.

Because egotism is funny in romantic comedies.
