I'm sorry, but a traitor is a traitor is a traitor. I don't care how mistreated they were, they deserved exactly what they got. I have no empathy for them. Fine cast, well acted, bad subject. The only movie I can think of that's dumber is that TV movie about buffalo soldiers where they spent the whole thing making a big deal out of how the buffalo soldier was the equal of any white soldier, how they loved their country as much and served just as honorably and well, then at the end of it they blatantly disobey their orders in an act of liberal bonding between black and red man. Hunh? And your point was...? Felt the same after this movie as that one. Just a real dumb, unsatisfying movie.

In order to betray, you must first belong. Historically, Irishmen have had ties to the Hispanic world (Flight of the Earls, etc.). The world of the Yankee Protestants, on the other hand, would have been rather alien to them.

However, I think that, for these guys, the correct response would have been to roll with the punches, suck it up, and out-last the discrimination, which is what the majority of Irish-Americans did.

By that token many of the Confederates captured in the Civil War should have been hanged. Strangely enough they weren't. Ever wondered why not ?
