John Malkovich acting as "Athos" is cringe-worthy. I adore Malkovich's acting when he's hot. But what happened in this film? He reads his lines directly from the script pages with little or no reality. Was he pissed at the director, other actors? WTH.

I stumbled on this movie on Netflix last night and decided to give it a go after not watching it since the late 90's, and since Irons and Malkovich were in it that seemed a deal clincher..... within 15-20 minutes I was starting to think "Malkovich is really phoning his performance in!"..... he just never seemed to get out of 1st gear in this movie at any point.
This movie is sandwiched between two of my favorite Malkovich movies (Con-Air and Rounders, and in this one he just does not seem interested).
