This movie sucks....

i know...right now there must be like 20 users who want to rip my guts out but its true...this movie is one of the worst ive ever seen...

Ive watched a considerable amount of movies from the united states in my relative short life....and thereĀ“s a thing ive learned from them... hollywood makes lame biopics, specially when another culture is one of the most important points of the plot of the film... this film is basically full of historical inaccuracies, lame hollywood cliches and a pathetic overuse, exaggeration and misinterpretation of mexican tradition and cultural elements...frida is portrayed as an extreme stereotype of the mexican woman the only thing missing was his sombrero and a bottle of tequila to complete de picture...

this movie is a hollywood stupid attempt to make a quick buck out of a pop cuture figure...

Well, guess what? You suck. This movie is a piece of art. Nothing like the actual art of Frida Kahlo (which is Glorious) but art none the less. To me, it's beauty. And OF COURSE there's going to be historical inaccuracies! That's *beep* hollywood for you. But who really knows the complete truth? Only the people involved know the whole, unexpurged truth. I like this movie. If you don't, well then too bad for you.

This movie totally exceeded my expectations!! It was very good, and as far as bopics go, one of the best IMO.

that's how hollywood works, metatron 90, that's how hollywood works..

I agree that Hollywood usually COMPLETELY exaggerates the "talent" that has become distastefully been accepted.
However.
This woman consisted characterizations of true genius, and the film did an excellent job of capturing her life and her transition from unknown artist to a complete success.
But, again, understand that everything I say is my opinion.
Also, consider the movie itself, characters and plot aside.
The cinematography within itself is a masterpiece!
Lighting, camera angles, and the fact that actual artists came in to recreate Frida's art and that the sets were built to replicate her life to the point seems a bit dedicated, no?
Even if you hate Frida, (and her looks or habits could stray you away, although I do not understand why her traits are significant enough to completely despise her), maybe you should re-watch the movie just for that aspect.

Again, these are just my opinions.
As an artist and future filmmaker, I highly respect Frida
And this movie proves why.

Ever notice people that slag off a good film never reply on these boards...?

I agree, this movie is nothing but MEXplotation, going for Salma Hayek over Gabriela Roel (who is as capable an actress but not as bankable) and all el cheapo "magical realism" that the director was able to cramp in this movie, the Chabela Vargas scene, though a great song, is largely unnecesary.

For a good Frida Kahlo movie, Naturaleza Viva (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087297/) with Ofelia Medina is much better and much more respectful to the source material

And yes, I happen to be mexican living in Mexico City, mere minutes from most of the places this movie portrays.

People who say this is just Hollywood exploiting Mexico;
It should have been in Spanish; They should have used
a different actress; They should have used Mexican actors;
NEED TO DO SOME *beep* RESEARCH.

SALMA HAYEK made this movie, NOT Hollywood.
She worked for 10 years on this project before she even
decided on a script. And when she finally had the scrip,
she raised the money to make the movie. She basically went
door-to-door asking people for money. The people that provided
money for the movie wanted it in English so they could make
their money back. Salma wanted it in English to it could reach
a wider audience and expose Frida to the world.

Salma chose the director, Salma approved the composer who both did phenomenal jobs.
Salma asked Ed Norton to do a final re-write of the script.

Salma got approval and exclusive rights from Frida's family to make the movie.
(This is why the Madonna and Jeniffer Lopez projects never happened.)

Because of limited funds, Salma asked her close friends to be in the movie for
almost nothing; Antonio Banderas, Ashley Judd, Ed Norton, and Mia Maestro.

Salma decided that Frida's life was too complex to portray in a 2 hour movie
and chose to focus on the LOVE STORY BETWEEN FRIDA AND DIEGO so that it wouldn't
turn out like the Ofelia Medina movie; vague and confusing (my opinion)
because they tried to cover too much.
It's NOT inaccurate, it intentionally just focuses on Frida's love for Diego.

I know people in Mexico are very proud and very protective of their
culture so their general reactions are understandable but GET A GRIP!
THIS MOVIE IS FANTASTIC AND SALMA DID A PHENOMENAL JOB NOT ONLY IN
ACTING, BUT IN CREATING THIS WONDERFUL MOVIE.

ps, I'm Mexican and proud of our culture and EXTREMELY PROUD OF SALMA.

Hear hear!!!

I simply am not there...

so you're Mexican, good for you. I hated this film, it was incredibly boring. Maybe she led a boring life and am not to be as entertained by this film as once though. By the way, you couldn't be more wrong. Salma Hayek had NOTHING to do with the script.

The is the same chick who would rather focus on bringing "Ugly Betty" to America. the worlds most overrated t.v. show since Ally McBeal. Just becasue you're Mexican doesn't make it good.

Thank you atomicgabe!!!!

Someone finally set the record straight.

^^Great post!! I agree, I thought Salma was excellent in the film, I loved the cast and I thought the supporting cast were equally great.

I feel sorry for you.

It was a good movie, no question about that :/

Why does there have to be a topic exactly like this for EVERY *beep* MOVIE ever!? No, honestly, I just don't get it.

"My name is Pylly and I'm american (so I know everything) and I have seen all the movies in the world so because of this I can say without a shadow of a doupt that _insert-movie-title-here_ is the worst movie ever made because of bibbity bobbity diddity bloob"

Who gives a *beep*!!!?

Congratulations, you have found a movie you don't like. Would you also like to tell what you had for breakfast and how much toilet paper you used the last time you wiped your bottom?

I know the boards in imdb are for discussions about movies, about the things you like and the things you don't like. But this constant whining about your personal preferences don't take anybody anywhere. Can't you see that? If you think that this movie, or any other, is the worst ever, that has meaning only to one person: yourself. You have now notified the universe about one of the most trivial things ever.

I'm so sick and tired and bored to death about finding this same *beep* in every movie board there is. Why can't you just go on and tell why you didn't like the movie, what you thought was wrong with it and what would you done differently. That might even be somewhat interesting. It might even start an interesting conversation. You know, as opposed to "I liked it" "I agree with OP" "I don't" etc. over and over and over and over again.

"Hello my name is Dickface and I don't like ketchup because it's all yicky and stuff. And believe me, I have a restaurant and I have eaten a lot of different foods so I know what I am talking about. Now I intend to crawl under my bed and cry myself to sleep"

Were you just in a bad mood when you saw this film. Most of the cast and crew were Mexican. The filmmakers injected Frida's art in the production design of the film. Salma was brilliant! Give me some specifics not just some bleeding heart self righteous elitist film critic crap!!!!

Damn good film. Those who didn't like it most likely didn't "get" it. Anyone who did like it or would like to know more about it should really watch the extra materials that are available on the DVD set. I'm tired of sour grapes and ignorance on these discussion boards. One shouldn't have to wade though so much crap to read intelligent comments.

It's a masterpiece.
