This movie sucks....

i know...right now there must be like 20 users who want to rip my guts out but its true...this movie is one of the worst ive ever seen...

Ive watched a considerable amount of movies from the united states in my relative short life....and there´s a thing ive learned from them... hollywood makes lame biopics, specially when another culture is one of the most important points of the plot of the film... this film is basically full of historical inaccuracies, lame hollywood cliches and a pathetic overuse, exaggeration and misinterpretation of mexican tradition and cultural elements...frida is portrayed as an extreme stereotype of the mexican woman the only thing missing was his sombrero and a bottle of tequila to complete de picture...

this movie is a hollywood stupid attempt to make a quick buck out of a pop cuture figure...

Do you even know anything about Frida Kahlo?

reply

i ask the same to you... do you even know the cultural background frida khalo had during her lifetime?

reply

I'm just glad that they even brought Frida Kahlo's story to the big screen. If anything, I'd be complaining about the biopic that they're going to make for Anna Nicole Smith. Someone please tell me why that woman was even famous. That's a real tragedy by itself...

One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor!

She was a genius.

Anna Nicole Smith?

reply

Anna Nicole Smith was as much a genius as Frida Kahlo. It's amazing how the word "genius" gets thrown around so loosely.

Personally, I love the movie. I'd even say it was one of my favorites, but eveyone's entitled to their own oppinion. Anyway, I'm just commenting because I thought it was funny that you said the only thing keeping her from being portrayed as a sterotypical Mexican woman was the lack of a sombrero and a bottle of tequila. Maybe you need to watch this again because she is in fact holding a bottle or glass of tequila in probably 40% of the movie.

Just saw this movie yesterday. I'm not a big fan of biopics, and this one did nothing to change my opinion. Although it's excellent in a technical sense, it's completely lacking in psychological depth, which is pretty astounding when you consider the complexity of the real-life Frida Kahlo. Seems like many of the people who love this movie are confusing the shallow movie with the deep subject. If you're that easy to please, you've probably also been moved to tears by Hallmark cards...

reply

I tend to judge how good a biopic is compared to how accurate they are to a person's life. This movie was pretty damned accurate.

I cry over Hallmark cards, but only when I'm ovulating.....

That got a good chuckle out of me.

Yup.

Very good film, though. Sourpusses are a pain. Gatos amargos.

It's not exaggerated. That's really how it was. That's the way Frida dressed and acted. Just look up pictures of her on Google, she was very attached to her culture.
And if you didn't notice there were a lot of bottles of taquila...

And what 'inaccuracies' are you refering to?

reply

It had to be accurate. Why else would Salma Hyack sport a unibrow?

reply

i enjoyed it. i thought i lived up to her spirit, which i think is the most important thing to capture in a biopic.

viva la vida.

Maybe the OP should listen to the conversaton with Salma Hayek on the DVD where she talks talks about how Frida's niece said this was the first accurate portrayal of her aunt she'd seen and that she even gave Salma Frida's necklace, which was very important to her.

hey man. im mexican and i live in coyoacan near frida's house. i know a lot of this history. and i say... yeah, the movie is not a work of art, BUT is not the worst movie i ever see. you gotta be kidding. jajaja look this list http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom?tt0799949

I think. Si la hubieran hecho en español y con un director o directora que sepa mas de la historia de Frida, hubiera quedado mejor. claro, lo que dejo son a Molina y a Hayek. quedaron bien.

I don't claim to be an expert, but from the many Frida books I've read this movie is actually not all that far off. Plus I would argue that the Frida character portrayed in the movie is against type. I doubt that the stereotype for Mexican women in the 1930's and 40's is a tequila drinking, woman loving, opinionated, independent, out spoken, communist sympathizing artist.
