why did Oren NOT have his visor down ?

That doesn't make any sense. You're a NASA astronaut for crissakes.

The whole scene was ridiculous. Him grasping at his helmet as if his hands could do anything from *outside* was absurd, as well.

I took it from the start that he was an over self-confident jackass. That is why he forced the drill putting himself and his pals in an extremelly dangerous situation. He kinda explained this when later he said that he had been taught to be "the best".

reply

Oren HAD to go down into the drill tunnel because it was stuck and needed to go deeper to be effective, since it was away from the surface it would have been darker and didn't need his face shield and then it was full blown cluster frak trying to get everyone off before comet sunrise and Oren didn't react fast enough to moving his face shield which is done manually from the outside

Real life, probably closing his eyes tightly shut would have protected his eyes but its a movie and needs drama.

reply

Just a note: you can damage your eyes on earth "looking" at the sun with your eyes closed. On the comet, with no atmosphere to help minimize the effects, closing his eyes likely wouldn't have made any difference.

Yeah... ya know, alot of young and inexperienced kids think they know how stupid and foolish older people are. And yet, they can't,do simple math without a smartphone. Sometimes I wish for a solar flare.
Ya don't get to be old by being a fool.

I think it was giving an illustration of experience vs training.

Other than 'simulations', he has had no practical experience on a extraterrestrial body. None of his training scenarios involved being ejected by a gas jet from an asteroid, thus no procedure to put his mask down.

Spurgeon, if he was being ejected from the asteroid, he would have instinctively put his visor down before it was needed (if not already having it down in the first place).

That is why Oren did not have his visor down. Not being able to react to unexpected events.

He so dum

He was a dumb-ass. Every movie needs at least one of those to up their body count.

Schrodinger's cat walks into a bar, and / or doesn't.

I always wondered why didn't he just close his eyes. I don't know if that would be 100% safe in space but it seems to work just fine on Earth.

Exactly. If anything, it would have just been minimal damage to his eyes that probably could have been treatable if they had survived trying to save the rest of the world.

it doesn't matter now. he dead.
