Comet Lands Mid-Pacific Instead of Mid- Atlantic

Would that mean that places like Hawaii and Japan would probably cease to exist when the wave hit them?

I'm guessing that U.S. would be 49 states then probably forever. There would be no way to rebuild/reconstruct the island that far away from the mainland which itself would take a serious hit on the West coast to the Rockies.

Would San Andreas Fault be activated when wave hit West Coast? That could also be a byproduct of the wave.

Hawaii has mountains but they don't seem to be as tall as the East Coast Appalachians and would probably be washed away if the wave is comparable to the one shown in D.I.

This is one of the scienticic errors of this movie. A water inpact is VASTLY worse than a land impact. Even if the land impact was (improbably) a major city, the loss of life would be minor in comparison to a water impact.

Land means a large amount of energy is sent back into space. Water means all energy absorbed.

Absorbing energy of this sort is BAD

I'm guessing Hawaii would still be there - might not be many people left on the islands which would make for an interesting problem if the majority of the survivors wanted thier independence back.
Perhaps also, assuming the asteroid didn't score a direct hit, the disturbance might kick off volcanic activity and increased rate of island building.

If it hit in the mid Pacific, Hawaii would stand no chance.

The entire west coast of North America would suffer catastrophic losses, along with all of east Asia and Japan. No Pacific island would survive.

They call me the wanderer.

It looks like the wave crests around 1300 feet from what they show of the WTC when it hits NYC.

6 of the 8 Hawaiian islands are 2000 feet or more higher than that. While very little of the man-made structures would survive the islands themselves would probably do just fine with plenty of opportunity for their population to take to higher ground. Of the two islands that were under the 1300 foot mark only one is occupied with a population of 170.

Are waves of that size even possible?
