really not that G-rated and as soft as most claim

one of the biggest criticisms i hear about a bugs life is that it's too soft, kid friendly, cuddly, nothing challenging or dark. i disagree. it's definetly got some dark and intense moments; hopper's first arrival scene, the bird chase, the scenes in that heavy fog, and hopper's death are all pretty damn dark and heavy handed. hopper's first scene where they all break in underground is probably the darkest scene in the movie.

not to mention, flik and the circus bugs straight up murder about 30-40 bugs in that bar and we see dozens of lifeless bodies laid to waste. the joke where the mosquito orders blood and gets drunk was straight out of Antz.

speaking of Antz, i think that's why this movie is usually called too soft. it just gets compared to antz, which is more obscene. i honestly think bugs life is darker with its subject matter and overall themes, it's just that Antz is raunchier and has more naughty language. the dark scenes in a bugs life are about as dark as the dark scenes in antz, it's just that a bugs life knows how to bring the light back in.

in terms of pixar, a bugs life is definetly darker than all three cars films, finding nemo and finding dory, and monsters university.
