4 and 5 is almost a wash; Vegas i feel had smaller but more frequent consistent laughs whlle European only had a few big laughs.
Thoughts?
VACATION-Not only the best 'Vacation' movie, but also the best National Lampoon's movie. Yes, it's better than 'Animal House'! Not only is the film drop-dead hilarious, it also has surprisingly great tender and serious moments that ring true. It's not a throwaway silly sight-gag comedy, although there are a few gags thrown in for good measure. The family chemistry is utterly believable. Chase and D'Angelo are terrific and this movie of all the films had the best acting of the Griswold kids in Anthony-Michael Hall and Dana Barron.
CHRISTMAS VACATION-Definitely the best sequel and also a great Christmas movie. And it's all Chevy Chase, which is a good thing! More of a sight-gag movie mixed in with believable family moments. A lot of great bits, but there are a few draggy parts as well. Not quite as even-keeled as the original, but hilarious nonetheless. Also, the Griswold kids had the least prominent role in this one and the kids are usually a major part of the movies. It's ironic because in terms of combined future fame of the child actors, this movie trumps all others since the 2 kids were played by Juliette Lewis and Johnny Galecki.
VEGAS VACATION-Fun movie mainly because of the setting and the constant is Chase, D'Angelo, and Quaid continuing to essay their iconic characters perfectly. And Audrey was HOT in this one! The actress was actually 24 irl at the time so I'm not a pervert!
EUROPEAN VACATION-I love 80s movies, they are the ones I grew up one, but this one is TOO 80s!

Can't believe people rate Christmas Vacation so highly. For me it's dumbed down and has no appeal of the original series, just a bunch of "oops, I fell on my nose"-jokes without any thought behind them.

To me, the original had too many parts that were just not funny, along with some really funny parts. Christmas had more laughs start to finish. Vegas was decently amusing throughout, except for the weird role played by Wayne Newton uncomfortably going after a married woman, but the Vegas movie didn't have really big laughs like the two I rated higher. European wasn't bad, just weaker than the others.

For the life of me I cannot understand how Christmas Vacation is rated THE HIGHEST on IMDb.
I also think that Vegas Vacation is better than it is given credit for.
European I would say is good for the first half. It starts to fall down when they arrive in Germany.

For those listing Christmas Vacation at number 4, well I think you're all *beep* in the head, to quote Chevy from the first film. ;)
For me it's:
1. Vacation (a very solid, adventurous kinda epic comedy with AMH almost as funny as Chevy)
2. Christmas (Not just a decent comedy but a very full-on Xmas film which makes it my favorite overall Xmas movie - though not my favorite comedy of course)
Jury is out on the other 2 but I didn't think much of European vacation, it was quite badly written. I've not seen vegas yet but I think it'd be hard to be worse than European but maybe on a par. We'll see.
