why does everybody thinks that it´s better than te first?

I just don´t understand!!! Would anyone be so kind to explain me?
I grew up with Toy Story 1 and I think it´s one of the most beautiful motion pictures in the history of man kind. Then I heard that a second part was coming and I thought: "wow how wonderful!! yipee yay!!" and alll that stuff. But then I watched it, and I admit that I felt extremely disappointed with this film. I think it was sassy, I think it was extremely exagerated and too over-worked. I don´t know if the Spanish traduction (I´m mexican) gave me that impression, but I´m not satisffied with anything about this movie.

I think it might depend on when you saw all of the movies, i.e. how old you were at the time of viewing. If you were a kid and saw the first one in the theater, it probably had such an impression on you that the second one couldn't possibly top it no matter how good it was.

In my case, I have a somewhat unique perspective in that I literally saw all three of them for the first time this past week. I got the first two through Netflix and saw the third one in the theater. Having said that, here is my opinion:

Toy Story: Really, really good
Toy Story 2: Much, much better than TS
Toy Story 3: Much, much better than TS2

You can clearly see how everything has improved from one film to the next when you watch them all in such a short time frame like I did. Plus, since I didn't see either of the first two of them when they came out, I didn't have any sort of sentimental or emotional attachment to them that most people do.

Make me like you, you stupid Diet Coke!

TS2 just didn't provide that same sense of wonder and excitement that the first film did.

I thought it was okay but nothing special, not like the original. Maybe because they made it too humor-focused? I don't know.

I think they are all great movie's, each having it's own meaning at the end of every movie. I personally feel that TS2 got what it deserve as far as it's ratings just because it was an entirely different movie than the first one. Even though it continued from where we left off watching in the first one but you see a change in the story, you can see the growth in Andy and even in the Toy's itself. It brought you on a roller coaster of emotions from beginning to the end when woody got shelved for the fist time and he saw one of his old "Toy Friends" Weezy up there broken. You just couldn't help to tell yourself "I hope this does't happen to the other toys" or "Dag Andy got bored with weezy, will he get bored with the rest"..So it definitely kept people on the edge of there seats. I admit there are some areas where it was like "um ok" but then you realize it all fits in to help the story progress in a way to not leave anything unanswered. I am a huge fan of all the Toy Story movies my favorite will always be the first one, but I definitely think the second one deserves it's props

Here are my problems with "Toy Story 2".

People say that it's better than its predecessor because it's deeper and more poignant. But deeper isn't always synonymous with better. It depends on how you handle the subject or if the story requires it. But the problem with "Toy Story 2" is that the deep subjects doesn't make it better, just more sappier.

In the other films, Woody goes through real problems. In the first film, he's replaced by Buzz. In the third film, Andy has grown up. Those are real issues. In the second film, Woody does have the illusion of that Andy won't play with him just because of his broken arm. But the whole thing is just a big misunderstanding, which leads us to the problem: Woody's problem isn't real. He's just assuming that Andy is done with him and are worrying about it. If Andy actually did indicate that he didn't wanted to play with Wody anymore, it would have resonated his dilemma. Andy still gave the notion that he cared about Woody and left him at home because he actually CARED about Woody. Which made Woody's problem just internal and fictional.

Another problem is the Roundup Gang. In contrast to Woody, they actually had real problems. Jessie's owner grew up and abandoned her. Stinky Pete was never sold. So therefore there's a reason to feel sorry for them. The problem is that neither of them earns the viewers affection. Jessie was too over the top and annoying (I actually liked the nasty side of her, it would have made character better), while Stinky Pete just turns out to be a villain because of that reason, when a villain wasn't really needed. Boring!

Otherwise, "Toy Story 2" lacks a real structure. While the first movie had one several It has too many subplots and too many characters to pay attention to.

While "Toy Story 2" doesn't lack it's moments of joy and heart, it's still not as wonderful (at least in my eyes) as everybody wants it to be.

I just wanted to chip in to say you've summed up how I feel about TS2 and how it compares to TS perfectly.
Also people saying that the improved CGI scores a point for TS2 doesn't stick for me...There are plenty of dated graphics in other mediums (such as video games) that still have more appeal. Looking better does not equal better.

Were you talking to me or to the OP?

I was talking to you, sorry if it wasn't clear!

Oh, thanks :)

What are you talking about, there were 'real' problems in ts2, they were going to go to japan for goodness sake. I also believe that your idea of owners not wanting to play with there toys is 'not a real problem' is wrong, come on almost all toy stories have this problem in toy story 3 they believed that andy didn't want them any more, this is a toys life to be played with so it is infact a real problem.

To continue your idea of there being to many subplots is a bit to exaggerated, in toy story 1 there was the idea of a new toy and a jealous old toy and toy story 2 had the idea of a toy being stolen and having to pick to stay with it's owner or help other toys. I knew what was happening and i like it.

I'm happy stinky pete was a villian, he would be anoying in toy story 3 and he needed to be made because there needed to be a villian which could always interact with the toys.

To be honest the reason i think people like one film better than the other is if they grew up with it people born in the years 1998- would like toy story 2 more because there parents are likely to buy it for them and they would repeatedly watch it, people born before it would of grew up with toy story 1 and therefore like it more.

Toy story 2 is my favorite animated movie following is nemo then wall-e. I just wish people could see this and rate it higher on this website, it doesn't deserve a 7.9.

after reading your post, you seem like a blind fanboy who would defend your favorite movie no matter what flaws it have.

and yes, toy story 2 has too many subplots.

and no, this film doesn't deserve 7.9. it deserve worse.

reply

No, no why would it deserve worse are you crazy? It deserves more much more.

reply

see? just proves my point that you're a blind fan. it's a pity that you get so easily access to the internet.

You misunderstood my post. I never said that "Toy Story 2" didn't had real problems, I said that Woody's internal struggles weren't real, in contrast to the Roundup Gangs struggles. And I never said that owners outgrowing their toys wasn't a real problem. You should read my post again. I wrote that Andy didn't take Woody with him because he want Woody to loose his arms. Of course Andy couldn't play with the toys in the third flick. Andy had grown up. That's another issue

I shall confess that I had forgotten about the trip to Japan, though, so yes, I do count it as a real problem.

only four words are needed to explain why part 2 is better than part 1: When She Loved Me.

Nothing tops that scene. That scene moves me every single time. It's very powerful and it made the movie what it is. I'm not saying the first film isn't good. It's bloody brilliant. But TS2 is just a tiny bit better.

THIS x2.

That sequence tore me up inside. Plus, TS1's too short.

Well that's the thing you grew up with it, I grew up with toy story 2 shrek and chicken run and that is probably the reason I love them so much. Even if we get past this I think that the second toy story is the best then the thirs then the first , toy story 2 has all you would like awesome scenes (the cones, geri and his fixing, the plane and the best part the toy barn) it has good music a new heartwarming character; bullseye my favorite. Don't get me wrong toy story 1 is still good but I would never say it is better than the second one.
