Titanic vs A Night to Remember

I’m sure this comparison has been done to death but I’ll throw my two cents worth in. I just finished watching both A Night to Remember and Titanic and want to post my thoughts. I’ve seen both movies many times. I thought Titanic was a great movie epic. Technically it had fantastic sets, special effects, costumes, all being wonderfully done. I really felt I got a chance to see what the Titanic was like. That’s not to say I really felt what it was like to experience what the people on the ship went through. One scene that stands out for me was when Rose and Jack were at the locked gate and had to retrieve the key. Something about the flashing lights in the background just said that this was a movie. I lost my “willing suspension of disbelief.” I didn’t feel their pain. This is not to take anything away from Titanic, its a incredible movie.

A Night to Remember however is just the opposite. Technically it’s pretty good for its time but it can’t compare to what is possible now. That said it conveys the emotions of what the people were going through far better. There were glimpses of emotion in Titanic, but to me they were kind of few and far between. Most of the time I can feel myself being wowed by the movie making of Titanic, but not so much by the story telling. ANTR has so many scenes I can think of that bring out my emotions. Offhand it’s hard to pick the best. I think one of the most emotional scenes in ANTR is where the old waiter finds and tries to comfort the lost little boy. That one chokes me up when I see it. I felt that man’s love for that little boy and his determination to make his last moments as calm as possible. Titanic has a somewhat similar scene with the Irish lady and her kids in bed, but it doesn’t affect me as much. Another example is the gentleman putting his wife and kids into the boat. Both movies have similar scenes but I FELT what he was going through, and what his wife was thinking, far more in ANTR than Titanic.

It just seems to me that Titanic is a great movie, while A Night to Remember is a great story.

I liked ANTR too but I prefer Titanic.
I don't mean to sound cruel but the scene when the ship is about to disappear beneath the waves in ANTR and you can see splashes on the water (people jumping off of the stern) increasing by the second, I'm sorry but this scene was hilariously done. I can see stones being thrown by an invisible hand but not people falling down.

Two words: No. Point.

A Night to Remember, hands down! The acting in it is 1000x better than that in Titanic.

My biggest problems with Titanic were...

The spitting scenes & the cussing & the who cares how I act attitude.

I don't know if these things were actually "Common", But this seemed very unrealistic to me for a movie that was taking place in 1912. Maybe I have been falsely taught to believe people were more reserved and had been taught proper manners, but when I watch other movies from before half a century ago, they also seem to support this belief too.

ANTR feels much more like it is really 1912 to me.

I do prefer to watch Titanic for the Accurate Sets, visual effects, tenseness of the Collision, and music. It is far superior to ANTR... And yes, I am not talking about B&W vs Color or Specialized CGI Effects. Look at the original Star Wars trilogy with all the MODEL work. It still holds up well today... ANTR doesn't.

One last thing. Frequently, each RMS Titanic investigation reveals more truth, and accuracy into how the ship really sank. While Titanic is superior to ANTR in that regard (WHICH CAN'T BE HELPED), Titanic is now 19 years on, and it know seems Titanic is out of date to what we know now.

I agree with another poster who said...

"ANTR is a better story, but Titanic is a better movie."

It really depends on what the viewer wishes to see.

Still, I think every viewer should see BOTH movies at least once.

some of the scenes in ANTR were taken from the unreleased footage of a nazi film that was shelved after only a small theatre run.

not that this lessens ANTR as a film, just a point of interest.

One is a more of a docudrama, the other is more of a Hollywood epic type. They are based around the same subject, but they are two very different films. Why pair them against each other?

reply

Because they're both Titanic films?

Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.

Point there, because one is based on actual stories of the disaster itself, while the other is fiction which happened to take place on the disaster.

It's probably better to pair James Cameron's movie against the 1996 miniseries which came out before his movie, or even the 1950s one starring Barbara Stanwyk.

Meanwhile, pair ANTR against SOS TItanic, since that too, was based on the disaster itself, rather than historical fiction.

Actually, I think the reason people pair them against one another is because ever since James Cameron's movie came out 20 years ago, it became the "face of the disaster" itself. Whenever the Titanic would come up in discussion or the media, etc., James Cameron's movie would somehow be associated with it. I think most people feel that ANTR should be the movie to represent the disaster, because it was about the actual people, whereas James Cameron's movie was about fictional people (with a few actual people thrown in).

Every time this comparison comes up, it's used as an excuse to trash Titanic and praise A Night to Remember without end. It's an age old trick on the internet at this point.

Not to say the OP was doing this - it's just something I notice with other users.

Both of them are in my personal all time favorite films list. I don't have them compete considering it's like trying to take down the Great Wall of China with a plastic spork.

They're both trying to accomplish something completely different. One is a historical docudrama and the other is a Hollywood Romantic Epic, and yet people act like one was a remake of the other (???). I never will understand that one HAS to be better than the other, rather than just enjoying them equally.

RANT OVER: Hahaha, but really: if you want to watch an accurate movie about the sinking of the Titanic, A Night to Remember is the better choice. If you want to watch a movie about the atmosphere of Titanic - what it felt like, mood, accurate costume design, the luxury, etc., the Titanic is a better choice. Really depends on your mood.

I think most people agree with you: Titanic is a really great romance, but, watching ANTR feels exactly like you are watching the actual disaster unfold, right before your very eyes!!!!

Except when you're watching ANTR the way the ship sunk is completely inaccurate.

Even though there have been plenty of theories presented as to how the ship sunk since Cameron's release, I'd like to think that Cameron's interpretation is closer to the actual event (minus the love story).

However, both films are great in their own right and I enjoy them both.

Well yes, but, ANTR was filmed decades before the wreckage was discovered. The 1996 miniseries, which was also called Titanic showed the ship splitting in half too, & yet it doesn't negate on the fact that miniseries was total crap!!

Yup I agree with you!

I prefer Night to Remember: it felt more like a faithful attempt to record what happened in history. This 1997 movie was too Hollywood-ish, with the romance scenes, the evil villains (Cal), the Celine Dion music etc
