John Hannah is no leading man

He dampens what would otherwise be quite a good movie. Sorely miscast. He's no alpha male, no matter how much rowing and drunken revelry he takes part in with his mates to convince us otherwise, and the love scene is embarrassing, like some hot bird giving a lucky dweeb a mercy shag. He just can't pull it off.

And would any woman, I mean ANY woman, have been piss*ng herself laughing at his Monty Python Spanish Inquisition impression?

He should stick to wiping egg yolk out of Simon Callow's beard. Now that I bought.

I completely disagree. 110% disagree.

If you could manage to push your disagreement an extra 10 percent, I might be swayed to your opinion. Actually, 12 percent would clinch it. I'd be grateful if you'd keep me informed as to your flexibility in this matter.

reply

Yes the Monty Python stuff just made him look like a total dork!!

well. i don't really feel that helen was completely attracted to him at the beginning, which is reasonable because he's no hunky leading man type. he won her over with his silly personality and niceness. i think he was appropriately cast. if they had some sexy alpha male, her being coy with him at first would have seemed unreal.

He may not be conventionally "leading man" handsome, but I do find him physically attractive, especially in this film. However I do think he's one of those actors whose level of attractiveness depends on what character he's playing. For example, when he's in "The Mummy" I find him less appealing, because his character isn't exactly written in a manner meant to be attractive - he's more the comic relief. And in "Spartacus" his character is just a dick, so I can't like him there at all - again though, we're not meant to.

In Sliding Doors, we are meant to see him as a good match for Helen.

And trust me, that Monty Python stuff and his sense of humour combined with his genuine kindness would have won me over very quickly. Maybe it's because I'm a kind of geeky person myself, but his personality would be appealing to quite a few women, I think.

Not everyone is after an alpha male, as you put it. That's an incorrect perception.

whitestar1912, very well said. Like you said, he's less appealing in The Mummy but I definitely think he is believable and appealing in this movie. You described everything I was thinking about him.

reply

You'll have to speak for yourself. I'd go for him in a hot minute.

reply

I think you'd go for me in an even hotter minute. How YOU doin? *wink*

lol

Completely disagree! Maybe you think all women are after the alpha male?! You're living under a rock if you think that's the case lol because I'm certainly not. James' character is actually the kind of guy I'd like to date in real life. He's genuine, kind, sweet, and very, very funny. He's not 'typically' attractive, but I personally find him VERY attractive, and his personality makes him more attractive. Taste is relative I suppose.

I loved his Monty Python impression! It was hilarious!

I LOVE him in this movie! I think the point is he doesn't need to be an alpha male... just a sweet, kind and funny man. I'm pretty sure all men aren't alpha types and are attractive to some women in a particular way.

I happen to love Monty Python and love John in this movie. I'd take a cute, funny, little guy over a big, swaggering, jerkwad any day ;)
