is it as good as the book?

I adore this book, one of my favorite Dean Koontz novels, but I haven't seen the movie yet. is it as gripping as the book? I'm not a very big fan of Ben Affleck, but I'm still interested in watching it.

but don't go by me... I broke a shoelace this morning...

I, honestly, loved them both. Were they different? Yes. But I thought they were both awsome. Not that I wouldn't have liked the movie to be closer to the book, but that would also make a damn long movie.

And... What was so awesome about the movie? The fact that almost everything that happened in the movie wasnt in the book?

reply

I read the book before I saw this movie. The movie's definitely not as good as the book, but I found it enjoyable. I was disapointed after my first viewing, but after repeated viewings I found I liked it more.

no, the book is a million times better. the movie does have okay moments such as Peter O'Toole is absolutely perfect. Ben Affleck is terrible and badly cast in this role.

reply

I dunno. I'm watching the movie right now and I'm enjoying it pretty much. More than the typical creature/critter flick. Love, love, love Peter O'Toole! Leiv totally creeped me out and I was GLAD when he got his brain sucked out, but I have a feeling he'll be back before the end of the movie. Someday I'll even read the book.

You have to read the book and then I dare you not to think that the movie should have been at least 3 hours long to justify the book :-) I remember when I read the book I thought that Dennis Franz should have played the role of Deputy Stuart Wargle. But then again 15 years ago that I read the book and I thought that James Woods should play the Sheriff, He got those lazy eyes that would work in this movie, well if it was made 15 years ago :-)

Affleck was the bomb in Phantom's!!!

Affleck was the bomb in "Phantoms", yo.

Not even close to being as good as the book. A lot of the details got changed when they didn't need to be (names, locations, etc...)

I love the book.....the movie is.....decent.....I saw it before I read the book because that was the height of the whole Ben and Matt craze and I saw that Affleck was in it and decided what the he!!.....I prefer the book.....the only difference between reading the book and watching the movie (plot lines excluded, so please don't yell at me) is that by reading the book, you don't get to watch the nuanced mastery that is Peter O'Toole.....other than that, I'd recommend the book before the movie

The book was good, the movie follows the book pretty well, but has some characters missing that was in the book, typical of any movie. I was most shocked that Peter O'Toole accepted the role of Timothy Flyte, because this was a pretty low budget movie. Overall, the movie is decent, but most of the Dean Koontz novels don't seem to translate over the film well. Stephen King novels tend to translate better over to the TV/movie media.

I saw it was on one of the Showtime channels today. I looked it up and it's playing on Showtime and Encore channels this week for those who haven't seen it yet.

Ben Affleck was the bomb in "Phantoms"...I love that running gag in the Jay & Silent Bob movies along with the Miramax gags in the Kevin Smith movies!

Well, *beep* me gently with a chainsaw. Do I look like Mother Theresa?

I watched this movie when I was like 12 and enjoyed it. Some of it stuck with me until now (I'm 25). I have just started a Koontz reading spree and after finishing the book I fired up the movie.

Oh. My. God. It is the worst film ever made. It has NO coorilation to the book what so ever. They cut out half of the major characters, and then re-arrange everything that happens to the point where you don't even feel it's the same thing as the novel.

The girl they hired for Lisa has the LARGEST buttchin known to mankind (it almost makes Ben's seem like a normal chin). No characters have any emotion at all and it's just unrelated to the book.

If you read the book, please do yourself a favor and NEVER watch this movie.

I respect Koontz less for even agreeing to this slaughter of his book, even if he was younger then and just wanted some easy money. As an artist, he should of saved himself some dignity and abandoned it all.

Finished the book a couple days ago and checked out the movie on Netflix.

It pales in comparison to the book for sure and wasn't really good, of course if I never read the book it probably would have been better to me, but the book is so detailed that it probably shouldn't have been made into a movie to begin with but that probably rings true for and book to movie situations.

Dreamcatcher suffered a similar fate.
