I think this film is more about circumstance, attraction and blind lust, and not so blind love. I mean how could anyone resist Nastassja Kinski. I like the mix of Black White and Oriental.
But the thing is, is it about race, maybe in the US, but in England? I don’t know.
I knew someone would have asked this. I guess it's an american thing, because interracial relationships don't matter in any other place of the world. I thought this was a great film and I really like Mike Figgis, I like all the movies of his that I've seen (this one, the exceptional Leaving Las Vegas and The Loss of Sexual Innocence).
"I guess it's an American thing because interracial relationships don't matter in any other place of the world"
Are you kidding? Sorry but that's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read. It's preposterous. They matter to many in every corner of the world.
It's still an issue in the US, though that is changing slowly. As a Causasian man who has been in relationships with non-Caucasian women, I can tell you it can become a matter of no small importance with those who have nothing better to do then condemn and judge. I am currently married to a Caucasian woman, and she has also had relationsips with non-Caucasian men and had felt the same type of pressure from others.
What I've always found odd is that it comes from all sides. NO ONE seems happy with an interracial couple in America. It's unfortunate and ugly.
It's a big issue everywhere - and is changing slowly in the U.S. more than elsewhere. This is a subject that is the heart of many movies - particularly in Britain over the last 30 years.
I think the movie is a fantasy as far as the inter-racial relationships - a "let's pretend" that it doesn't matter to anyone, would never occur to anyone as something noteworthy. It would anywhere on earth. It's a lovely fantasy that it would never be remarkable - but an utter fantasy quite deliberately done by the moviemaker.
I wasn't aware that it was an issue when I saw the film, I just thought 'these are the characters'. Later I found people making a huge deal out of it, it so wierd. Race isn't the issue in the film, its about relationships.
Yes, I think the film is color blind. The film was atypical in every way. The only issue raised in the film was homophobia. The race of the characters was not an issue in the movie.
This movie to me was about attraction and compatibility. Wesley and Natassja's characters were drawn to each other because they shared the same interests and sensitivities. Wesley's character's wife acted like she did not even understand him most of the time.
