My Cast Picks For the Movie Musical

I know this has been discussed....but I made up a list of actors who I think would make a good cast if the movie is made. Now most of the people I have picked are from recent movie musicals..."Moulin Rouge", "Chicago", "Rent" and "Phantom of the Opera". Obviously, you will see I'm more of a "Rent" fan then anything else. =) Let me know what everyone thinks:

Jean Valjean - Hugh Jackman

Javert - Gary Oldman (I think he can sing)

Fantine - Nicole Kidman

Madame Thenardier - Indina Menzel

Thenardier - John C. Reilly

Eponine - Rosario Dawson

Cosette - Emmy Rossum

Marius - Adam Pascal

Enjolras - Ewan McGregor

Grantaire - Jesse L. Martin

reply

Seriously, all you people with Emmy as Cosette, NO!! KEEP HER THE HELL AWAY FROM SINGING/ACTING! Ugh! Go play in traffic. She is not a good singer or actress. Keep her away. And I read Gerry Butler on here I think. OMG NO!!!! Please God I think I'd kill myself no lie. I would seriously die and hate this musical if they killed it like they did in Phantom with the acting and "singing". People, STOP GOING BY LOOKS!!! GO BY TALENT!! EMMY AND GERRY HAVE NONE SO LEAVE THEM OUT OF IT! GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

I'm so sorry but I really hate those two and when people think that they have talent it REALLY pisses me off badly. I'm sorry but go on...

i know i'm the minority, but i don't like Daphne. I was listening to the 2000 revival of Rocky Horror and she sings "Science Fiction Double Feature" and she was like... legitimatly awful. If she got cast in the Movie Musical of Les Mis I'd like... jump off a cliff. She was really bad.

In my humble opinion, Kate Winslet would make a brilliant Fantine.

[deleted]

Yes, she can sing quite well, actually. I love her singing voice. As for her healthy look, it will suit the character before "Lovely Ladies" - after that, I'm sure a bit of make up can do wonders.

You can listen to a clip of her voice here:
http://www.amazon.com/What-If-Steve-Mac/dp/B00005RG9L/sr=1-1/qid=1163495593/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-7263168-9215918?ie=UTF8&s=music

Of course, her voice in the clip doesn't sound like a Fantine, but she has a wide range, so I'm sure she could pull it off.

Every day I wake up with the hope that Cameron Mackintosh and Alan Parker (who was the director announced for "Les Mis" many years ago) give this film another chance. And Alan has worked with Kate, so I'm pretty sure he would at least consider her.

reply

Ok, WHY THE CRAP is everyone casting Patrick Wilson as Enjolras??? And Michael Ball as Grantaire?? I think Patrick Wilson would do well as Combeferre or Courfeyrac, but not as Enjolras. Gary Mauer would have to win my vote for Enjolras and there is only one Marius, Michael Ball. As for Gerry Butler, he'd probably be a good Feuilly or Joly or just maybe a good Grantaire. He has that rough edge to his voice so why not.

I've said enough, feel free to tear my list apart.
Vote Valjean or DIE

Okay. First off, Nicole Kidman is an awful choice for anything musical related. She barely got through Moulin Rouge without ruining it. Please keep her away from anything Andrew Lloyd Weber has ever touched. Also, Patrick Wilson, Emmy Rossum, and probably most of the cast of Rent will not do another movie version of a musical for a very long time, if ever, to avoid being typecast. Emmy Rossum would be an idiot for going from Christine to Cosette, which is roughly the same character, in the span of three or four years...plus, a singer she may be, but a good actress she is not. Count all of those people out, they'd be fools to do it, eventhough I do think Idina Menzel would be vocally stunning as Fantine.

And just because most of the cast of Rent still looked young enough to pull off their original roles, does not mean this a capable of being done all the time. Lea Salonga as Eponine would be visually irresponsible, especially to the people seeing it who never saw it as a play and doesn't own the Original Cast Album. She's too old. I don't know about Hugh Jackman as Valjean, it might work, I'm not sure. I don't know many people who'd pay ten dollars to go see Les Miserables starring Kelsey Grammar, though. I do think that familiar names help bring in an audience, I think anyone who wasn't an original Renthead were probably drawn in by Rosario Dawson, Taye Diggs and Jesse Martin. If Les Miz was made into a movie, I don't think the original broadway cast would be wise for ticket sales. I'm just suggesting we think outside the box. I think most musicals, if done correctly would make excellent movies, and I'm ecstatic that the movie musicals are making a comeback. But aside from the right director, casting is key, and you never know who may be reading these message boards looking for ideas.

is there any word on a musical movie being made? or is this just wishful thinking? They should make a musical movie about this, I mean come on I love phatom but there are a ton of different phantom movies.

Michael Ball is WAY too old to be Marius. Hes in his 40's, he cant pull off a young adult on film.

Javert=Quast

Now that I've think of it, Anthony Andrews would make an awesome Jean Val Jean!

Really, I think it's a good idea to keep those big names away from this. In a perfect world they would just film a stage performance and slap it on a DVD like they've done with many musicals, but that probably won't happen. Woe is me. Anyway, if I absolutly had to cast a movie, I would say:

Valjean-Randal Keith. He was the Valjean in the tour and was almost as amazing as Colm

Javert-I'd love Quast, but I honestly don't think he'd do it. In my perfect world Anthony Warlow would be cast(believe it or not his rendition of "Stars" is amazing)

Fantine- This is kind of tough. Ruthie Henshall was my favorite, but I think she might be too old now. To all of those who want Kristin Chenoweth or Idina Menzel as Fantine I have to ask: WTF? Kristin Chenoweth is a coloratura soprano, and even though she can belt, you need a voice with a lower timbre to pull it off. Also, as an actress, she can't really pull off drama. She's more suited to comedic roles. As for Idina, she can't sing softly for anything. She absolutly has to belt and scream everything. I don't know if she'd be suited to it acting wise, either. Personally, how about Julia Murney? I adore her, and I think she'd be amazing for the role. Her vibrato can get a little out of hand at times though, but maybe they could work on that.

Cosette- Another kind of tough one. I love how everyone's casting Emmy Rossum, I really do. Just because she played Christine(not a very stellar performance, in my opinion) she's suddenly cast for every soprano role. I'd love an unknown, but I suppose that's cheating.

Marius- First of all, Patrick Wilson is a little too old to be playing Marius. I know he passed pretty well as Raoul, but for Marius, you really need a more boyish charm. Hayden Tee is rather attractive and has a nice voice. He played Marius at some point, I can't really remember where though.

Enjolras- I would really like Aaron Lazar. He's currently in the revival now and he seems just fine for the role. Hugh Jackman, I'm sorry, is a bit too old.

Thenardier- I saw that someone mentioned Robin Williams, and I actually don't think that would be too bad of an idea. I don't know how he would vocally handle Dog Eats Dog though.

Madame Thenardier- This is a little difficult, but it's ultamitly a character role, and you need a good actress more than you need a good singer. I see no problem with Jenny Galloway of Jennifer Butt. They both played the role(both interpretations were very different, but good non the less).

Eponine- Ah yes, something tells me this is going to be the source of the most controversy. Really, I think we need to keep the big names FAR away from this role. Lea Salonga would not work for several reasons. I don't mean to sound racist, but on screen, an Asian Eponine would just not work. Especially if she has two white parents. Her voice was good, but I honestly felt almost nothing for her. Everyone keeps gushing about the amazing voice she has, but that's honestly all she was(to me, at least. I know others feel differently). I loved Sutton Foster(Who was Eponine in the third touring cast) but her acting was rather lack luster(at least from what I can tell). I think we definatly need an unknown for this one.

Valjean HAS TO BE JOHN-OWEN JONES (current london valjean) he was voted worldwide as the best-ever Valjean, and, though he has no film pedigree, has an amazing voice. Sorry to disappoint but colm Wilkinson is, voice wise, past it. He was amazing in the few years he did it, but listen to him in the 95 Concert DVD and it is amazing how far his voice has dropped. If not Quast, roger Allam would have to play Javert. The original one in london, clear pedigree as an actor (played Lewis Prothero in V for Vendetta) and can still sing very well.

reply

defintily John Owen Jones, as I've seen him recently and he was excellent, however, I thikn Colm is the ultimate and best;similiarily Quast definitly, no-one gets near, he's amazing.

reply

Valjean - I whole-heartedly agree with you on Randal Keith there, he did a stellar job each time I saw him with the touring cast and although I love Colm... he has gotten too old to play Valjean, especially with how old he's supposed to be in the Prologue
Javert - Quast! Quast!! QUAST!!! a million times Quast... but I agree again, I don't know if he'd be tied down to such a large project. T'would be nice to see Allam at it again (as mentioned above) he just need to lose that weight from V for Vendetta
Fantine - After hearing a snippet of Kate Winslet, I think she actually could pull off Fantine with a little training, and she does look the part
Cosette - hmmm... not too sure... maybe Kerry Butler...
Eponine - Lea Salonga or Susan Egan would really be nice but I think they're getting too old
Marius - although it would be amazing to see Michael Ball reprise the role, he's gotten too old... so maybe.. I dunno... Brad Kane? but that's a stretch.
Enjolras - still undecided... those are some very charismatic shoes to fill
Thenardier - Norman Large, he did an amazing job as Thenardier during the most recent tour
Madame Thenardier - Jenny Galloway!
Grantaire - *sob* why can't Anthony Crivello be younger?! But I'd have to say Matt Rawle
Feuilly - Taye Diggs... I had to, he's just so pretty =)

One more dawn. One more day. One day more!

Feuilly - Taye Diggs... I had to, he's just so pretty =)

If your casting him for being pretty he should be courfeyrac. Courfeyracs a bit of a womaniser (atleast in the book he is) so he should be good looking.

I still think thta if a film of this was made it would star big names like ewan Mc gregor whether it was a good idea or not.

Ruffus. He's the man.

reply

(Have I commented here or was it a different thread? I can't find my post, so here's another one...)

People in musical theatre can sing and act. So the essential people in the cast are:

Javert: Philip Quast
Eponine: Lea Salonga. Who cares if she's old? Make-up can do wonders these days...
Marius: Patrick Wilson (he is such a Marius. And he's good a voice, too!)
Enjolras: ... actually, is Anthony Warlow too old? To whoever suggested Gerard Butler- NO. The man CANNOT sing, and I do not want to see one of my favourite characters in the musical acted well, but by a man who cannot sing!

Cosette- I can see Emmy Rossum doing Cosette, actually. Cosette just needs a pretty, light voice that blends with Marius' voice, and although Emmy's voice has no real substance (if you compare her to, say, Rebecca Caine- who would be good, but perhaps a bit old), she fits the criteria.

Ohh, if they made a movie musical, I would not stop watching it. Like 'The Sound of Music', I'd sneak it to my room when I'm 'studying' for exams, and- oh! *goes off into hysterics of delight*

I am totally on your side about Philip Quast (who I MET!!! after seeing him Evita with Matt Rawle and Elena Roger-the best Eva I have yet to see), Lea Solonga, and Anthony Warlow, but no one can beat Michael Ball's Marius, and he's ageless! Though, John C Reilly as Thenardier would definetly be worth seeing

reply

OMG libgo-1, are you joking? You've MET Philip Quast? As in MET and not just seen/gaped at and gotten the autograph of? Oh, I'm so jealous... I thought my seeing Anthony Warlow and later obtaining his signature was awesome. Hey, it still is, but- you met Javert!

Waiting for my Mr Colin Firth Darcy

reply

I think that although Emmy Rossum would fit Cosette, Cristine from the Phantom of the opera is a very similar character, they both have black and curly hair, they sing high, they are like good girls, etc...
But i want to know if is there really going to be a movie of the musical? Because i once red in Wikipedia that for the 2007 there was going to be one, but when i checked again, it was gone, and here in imdb it says nothing about a movie of the musical, but i really red it on wikipedia.

reply

What does it matter if the role of Cosette is similar to that of Christine? Rebecca Caine did both parts (and did them both pretty damn well!)

Oh, I hope they make a movie musical... but I hope they get a good cast. The last movie musical I saw (POTO) fell a little- shall I say flat? The only voice I was impressed with was Patrick Wilson's.

Waiting for my Mr Colin Firth Darcy

reply

Okay, this might be kind of controversial, but: what about Michael Ball as Valjean? He's probably just in the right age range to play him. If not him, what about Gary Morris? He could probably still pull it off. I think it would be a crime not to at least offer Colm Wilkinson a cameo or something though. So what about having him play the Bishop? I think that'd be appropriate, having him play the character who really changes Valjean's life.

reply

Again on Wilkinson being the Bishop in a Cameo his voice is too high. He is a tenor primarily and can probably go to a high baritone, but the Bishop is a Bass-Baritone.

reply

Umm... okay.

Firstly, I must say - rueplumet55, Neither Cosette nor Christine has black hair. And they aren't that similar.

I don't think Colm Wilkinson is too old, personally. Yeah, he's older than Jean Valjean, but you have to keep in mind that he'd just spend the last 19 years of his life in jail. That might be a good excuse for looking a little older than he is. And, by the end, he's really deteriorating anyway. And then there's the fact that Colm just wins at life.

Also? Cossette is not a belter, she a soft beautiful soprano that can go very high but with beautiful crisp sounding notes... so Emmy would be fine for her, perfect in fact. Its crazy to think that her voice is not high or strong enough, whoever said that... i have NO idea what version of phantom you're watching.

And I, in turn, have no idea what version this person is watching. Personally, I'm watching the version where her voice thins noticably on the high notes, and where the word 'Come' in the phrase 'Come to me, strange angel' is strained out of a squeak, and where some of the notes had to be lowered. However, her voice may have matured since then. Never know, so I won't judge yet.

They just announced that the guy who directed "The Kings Speech" has signed on to direct.

reply

Eponine... dang, I can't think of anyone else but Lea Salonga. Maybe they need to cast an uknown on this one.

reply

Whoever said John Barrowman for Valjean is a bafoon, and I usually don't use personal attacks on people here. Sure he can sing tenor as seen in The Producers but come on you are going to cast one of the most revered roles in musical history to the guy from SHARK ATTACK 3: MEGALODON. Now that's just silly.

reply

I've always thought Christe Carlson Romano (Belle from Beauty and the Beast) would be a good Cosette. I'd really like to see Lea Salonga as Eponine and Idina would be an interesting Fantine to say the least.

Idina Menzel would suck in any part in Les Miserables. Vocally, she can do anything. She has amazing pipes! The only thing she can't do is stop yelling the music. (Ask any professional singer, they will tell you.) With this in mind, she can't possibly play Fantine/Eponine(for those of you who were thinking it) because the part requires sensitivity, sincerity, and, for lack of a better word, intamacy.

I also think Ewan McGregor would suck as Marius for many reasons. One of which being: frankly, he's not that good looking. Not goona lie. What about Heath Ledger? I don't know if he could sing, but if he could he would be awesome. He looks young, yet old enough to play the part. And he has some star status.

Sorry to attack the conversation at whole, but I also don't think it's realistic that there will ever be a movie muscial of Les Miz because the entire thing is music. This makes it hard to change settings, etc...duh

Sorry to be such a cynic. :-)

reply

What is with all the hatred towards Mandy Patinkin? Seriously, I love that guy! He has a very distinctive voice, but that's a positive thing in a world in which everybody is a poptart clone of everybody else (see: American Idol). And for those of you who don't think he has the passion for Valjean, watch him as Che in Evita. Brilliant stuff, really. His voice isn't just soaring tenor; he's got some serious growl going when he wants it.

I know it probably sounds like I'm just copying the Jennifer Saunders idea, but what about Joanna Lumley or Dawn French as Mme. Thenardier?

Atemkin, I completely agree that Ewan Mcgregor isn't handsome enough for Marius! It does matter if the person they pick can sing, but looks are important too!
