My Cast Picks For the Movie Musical

I know this has been discussed....but I made up a list of actors who I think would make a good cast if the movie is made. Now most of the people I have picked are from recent movie musicals..."Moulin Rouge", "Chicago", "Rent" and "Phantom of the Opera". Obviously, you will see I'm more of a "Rent" fan then anything else. =) Let me know what everyone thinks:

Jean Valjean - Hugh Jackman

Javert - Gary Oldman (I think he can sing)

Fantine - Nicole Kidman

Madame Thenardier - Indina Menzel

Thenardier - John C. Reilly

Eponine - Rosario Dawson

Cosette - Emmy Rossum

Marius - Adam Pascal

Enjolras - Ewan McGregor

Grantaire - Jesse L. Martin

They're probably not going to ask anybody like the Rent, Moulin Rouge, or Phantom of the Opera casts if they can avoid it. Actors don't like being typecast and without naming names, there's a couple of these I could do without ever seeing in another movie ever because they've gotten on my nerves for some time.

Also no way would Idina Menzel ever do a part like this. She's a belter...she's Fantine or she's nobody in this film. I actually think that'd be interesting. Her "I Dreamed a Dream" would be the biggest tearjerker ever. Thenardier and his wife are character parts. You need someone who can sing but is mostly there for the color. I like British actor Robert Lindsay for Thenardiar and either Jennifer Saunders or Julie Walters (also both British). Jennifer I know can sing (I wouldn't call Shrek 2 a musical per se plus nobody saw her face) but Julie Walters might actually be a really cool M.T. (she's Mrs Weasley in the Harry Potter movies..not the same character type but you can totally see how she could tweak her voice/look to be the perfect person for the job). I actually like Gary Oldman, not heard him sing but if he can, he's awesome. I swear I thought Mandy Potinkin could sing--he could probably do Valjean if I'm right. I love Hugh but not sure he can do Javert or Valjean--call me nuts but I'd see him as Enjolras. Ioan Gruffudd can sing the right range so maybe him too. No way can Ewan sound like he'd rouse someone to a revolution with that voice. Adam's too old to play a teenager as much as I love him--he barely got a mid-20s rocker in the movie version of Rent. Rosario can't belt even though she can sing plus she has to look like the daughter of the Thenardiers, which she is. Nicole's too lightweight vocally to belt a Fantine. Shame Uma did The Producers or she could be nursed to reprise her part. Idina'd be the more natural vocal choice there though. Anne Hathaway's supposedly a soprano. I wonder if she'd work as Cosette. She's got really nice shiny perfect teeth though that get on my nerves--it's a Julia Roberts sorta mouth. Cosette needs to be as un-sickening as possible cuz it's bad enough as it is. For Marius? Not really sure. I'd say you're gonna go mostly British with this cast.

reply

rosario dawson as eponine? i don't really see it.

reply

i totally agree with squall231. if rosario dawsome was eponine, i would kill my self. well not really but still. it would just like, not work out.

I see Hugh as Enjolras as well! I like your ideas for the Threnadiers too.

reply

I think they should use people who were in one of the stage productions for a movie-musical, or at least Terrence Mann for Javert, Lea Salong for Eponine, and Michael Ball for Marius. Those are the only ones I've gotten to see (I've never seen it, just listened to the soundtrack a lot). But I was impressed by what I saw.

I just saw Lea Salonga as Fantine. She was a fabulous Fantine, just as she was a fabulous Eponine. She really is able to change her character and make the character her own; she never tries to play a character similar to the way another actor has. If they make a movie musical, she should definitely be in it.

I also saw Adam Jacobs as Marius... I think that he's the best Marius ever. I'm not sure about Javert; I don't really have an absolute favorite. Valjean would have to be played by Colm Wilkinson (which is probably not possible) or Alexander Gemignani.

Mandy Patinkin can sing.

I believe Mandy Patimkin sang the role of Che Guevara in the original Broadway production of Evita. I believe he was a successful stage actor/singer long before he became known for film and television roles.

emmy rossum for cosette is really good choice!

reply

I think Idina sounds more like an Eponine, but still, I wouldn't want her to play her part... and Rosario, no way. I'm not sure who would be good, but someone...younger.. Keira Knightley has a nice look, but who knows if she can sing. Hugh Jackman and Emmy Rossum would be excellent choices I think. Uma Thurman should play Fantine again. And Marius, uuumm...I loved Hans Matheson as him, but he's probably too old now, so I don't know.

Does anyone know if they are for sure making a movie musical version?

reply

Recycling actors from other recent move musicals is really just nonsense. It just doesn't happen. I do think Jackman however would work as Valjean I'll give you that one. My other choices that I think could definitely work are Jim Broadbent for Thenardier and Cristian Bale for Enroljas. Ok I reused both of them form previous musicals but sue me they both would rule these roles. I just thought about possibly Kristin Bell as Cosette and Anna Kendrick for Eponine. It could happen. Maybe.

reply

While I was watching Les Miserables at Gammage Auditoriu, I kept thinking of Russell Crowe as I watched Jean Valjean.

reply

kristen bell is amazing! i really don't know if i could see her in this type of play though. i could see her as eponine before cosette and that is still a stretch.

reply

NO.
Uma Thurman can't sing for *beep* And she seriously overracted in the movie.

reply

I would change idina menzel in M.T for Julie Walters or jennifer saunders. i think emmy rossum in cosette would be perfect and maybe ewan mcgregor could be marius

reply

To respond to magicscoobysnacks, yes, Mandy Patinkin can sing, he was in several stage musicals, including The Secret Garden, Sunday in the Park With George, and Evita. But he's a tenor, and I'm not sure sure what kind of voice Valjean needs, but though he would probably give Valjean a different quality, I bet he could do it. Does Michael Crawford still do movies or would he be too old for the part of Valjean? I'm sure he could sing it. There's also the Valjean who is so involved in doing him right now...saw him with the touring cast and he has a wonderful voice, but I'm not sure if he has a good film presence.

As for the whole Idina Menzel thing...I'm sure you could give her any character in Les Miz and she could pull it off. Just not Cosette.

And didn't Emmy Rossum play Christine in Phantom? She would probably be able to pull off Christine, for sure.

reply

For the record...whoever said Keira Knightley, she can't sing. lol...she auditioned for Phantom of the Opera, and she's said herself she couldn't sing (even the audition people told her, lol).

It's funny, actually, because I haven't been picturing Emmy Rossum as Cosette, but as Eponine. I think she could pull THAT off...because, well, doesn't Cosette need to be able to sing much better (well, more like have a stronger voice) than Ms. Rossum? Phantom is my favorite movie, so I've heard Emmy sing alot, but I don't think she would be able to do it. (Especially the parts where Cosette's voice jumps really high, and sounds very operatic, if you know what I mean?)

Lick it up, baby. Lick. It. Up.

reply

I dunno but for Eponine there's no one who can hold a candle to Lea Salonga! Lolz! I know she might be too old (incidently, how old is she now? *blush*) for the role, but no other could sing Eponine with such FEELING!!

Emmy for Cosette? The looks maybe...and with a lot of grooming (and score tweaking), she might be alright...

Hugh as Valjean? Oh dear....I love the guy but not as Valjean...I guess I've seen too much of Colm Wilkinson to imagine a young looking Valjean. Besides, Hugh and Emmy look way to close in age to be believable as a father and daughter!

Anne Hathaway is a soprano, but her voice is not powerful. She can sing pop or mainstream songs, but definately not musical songs, especially one that calls for the singer to infuse such raw feeling....

I can't help being an avid fan of musicals! :p

reply

Have to agree with you that Lea Salonga is the best! hehe :-) But I mean if they do make a movie, I doubt they would cast her...sad, isn't it. But anyways. I still say Emmy couldn't handle Cosette, they should find an unknown!

Lick it up, baby. Lick. It. Up.

reply

I really like the choices of Rosario Dawson as Eponine, and Emmy Rossum as Cosette! That's a really good idea.

reply

Valjean is tenor.

reply

Ok first off Hugh Jackman cant play Valjean. Hugh is a belter and Valjean requires someone with a soft voice. Listen to Bring Him Home and you will see. Gary Oldman as Javert? what were you thinking? Javert has to be a huge booming bass/baritone. If Kidman is in this movie I will kill myself. My cast would be the following:

Jean Valjean: John Barrowman

Javert: Bill Nolte (currently in The Producers as Franz)

Fantine: Kristin Chenoweth

Thenardier: Gary Beach or Nathan Lane

Madame Thenardier: Sara Ramirez (Spamalot)

Eponine: Lea Salonga

Cosette: Emmy Rossum

Marius: John Lloyd Young (Jersey Boys)

Enjolras: Hugh Jackman

Grantaire: Micheal Ball

Before anyone comments on age remember this is Hollywood, they can make anyone look any age they want.

reply

[deleted]

Michael Ball as....Grantaire??? WTF dude! No...just...no!

Vote Valjean or DIE

reply

out of all the casts I;ve read thus far... this is the best one. I think all these people would need to break their images and you need an awesome awesome director but I think they could all do it.

On another note, nicole kidman could not not not be in this movie. Same as rosario dawson.

And all in all, this shouldn't be a movie... for another 10 years. Right now it would just be rushed, badly marketed and would be a general failure.

reply

One word: NO. Here's my Les Mis dream cast:

Jean Valjean: Mandy Patinkin

Javert: Jeremy Irons or Michael Cerveris

Fantine: Patti LuPone or Michelle Pfieffer

Cossette: Idina Menzel or Kristen Chenoweth

The Thénardiers: Kathy Bates & Nathan Lane or John C. O'Reilly

Eponine: Kristen Chenoweth or Nicole Kidman

Marius: Ewan McGregor

Enjolras: Hugh Jackman

Grantaire: Patrick Wilson

reply

my thougts-

Jean Valjean: Hugh Jackman

javert: Ciarán Hinds

Fantine:Idina Menzel

Cosette: Emmy Rossum

The Thenardiers: Kathy Bates and an unchosen man

Eponine: i cant see anyone but Lea Solonga playing her

Marius: Patrick Wilson

Enjolras: Gerard Butler

you might find that last choice odd, but he's really fantastic and i think he could defanitly pull it off.

reply

No, no, no, and no.

Colm Wilkinson is the ONLY Jean Valjean.

Gary Oldman's voice is too high for Javert; you need a bass/baritone, not a tenor. Philip Quast is the only Javert.

Alun Armstrong is Thenardier; no question.

Everyone else should be picked later.

I think the hardest one to cast would be eponine. honestly, I do see hugh jackman playing valjean, but I really don't think idina menzel belongs in this at all. nothing against her, though, she's an amazing singer and a beautiful actress, but I simply do not see her in les mis, and I don't think that she has the right voice for it. As for emmy rossum, she would be an awesome cosette, and Kathy Bates would be so funny as m. thenardier. She can sing, and she was in annie. Patrick wilson=great marius, but Gerard Butler- can't stand him or his voice. If anyone saw the new revival of the show in new york, I'd say that Celia Keenan-Bolger (current eponine) would be amazing for the part. Her voice is amazing, but her acting was so convincing, I was crying before she even finished ON MY OWN. She's my favorite broadway actress.

This is a response to someone who said it:

Nathan Lane = Greatness :)

As for Emmy as Cosette? No.....Dear lord, no.

I perform out of love for singing, I sing out of happiness & happiness is the key to a healthy soul

Yeah!
I agree with you about Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone!!!! I LOVE THEM...

They can dub some of these people. They did it all the time in the old musicals. I hate how musicals now are compromising the integegrity of the music for "realism" in movies. I think you would need someone like Hugh Jackman or Nicole Kidman to add star power to these movies--although Kidman doesn't quite have the srength in her voice.

Hugh Jackman would be very good as Javert but not ValJean.

What about Meryl Streep as M. Thenardeir? She can sing well enough for that role and she would be hilarious, especially alongside Robin Williams as Thenardier himself. Glenn Close would be good too. That might bother fans of the original though, but at least Williams would be funny and that's the most important aspect of that role.

I don't think Emmy would be very good. Cosette doesn't have to be a great singer but Emmy sounds kinda shrill on the high notes. Plus, the role--although it holds most of the plot together--is pretty small, and she probably wouldn't want to be typecast.

I heard Elijah Wood can sing but I don't know where I would stick him in this, although I can see him as Marius, maybe.

But yeah, the majority would have to be newcomers or unknowns.

reply

Anne Hathaway would be a perfect Cosette, and Lacey Chabert (Gretchen in Mean Girls) played Cosette on Broadway, while Ashley Tisdale played little Cosette. Anne had to sing for "Ella Enchanted", and her voice is amazing.

reply

[deleted]

Where has everyone heard Hathaway sing? I only heard her once for very little on Ella Enchanted, but I can't come to any conclusions based on that.

reply

[deleted]

Anne Hathaway has a rather nice upper register; she can hit B6 very well, at least, though it's a bit forced. Her biggest problem lies in her vibrato which is fast and can come across as bleating. She needs to learn to control it. But I think she's ten thousand times better than Emmy Rossum.

reply

what about bernadette peters?

reply

i think ewan mcgregor would be great as marius. he has one of the best voices in hollywood. hasn't anyone seen Moulin Rouge?
