John Cusack

He may not have been 100% the best choice for his role, but my goodness...he has never been more handsome. I've always found him to be cute, but when he's in those dinner suits...wow, is he ever handsome. :)

I think he was the best for this roll as a "sport".
I love it when he called him that.
He plays a perfect foil (is that the word? = underlying sexual tension ) for Jim Williams and Lady Chablis.

Ephemeron.

After watching this again after 20+ years I have to say that John was a terrible choice to play off against Kevin Spacey's character. I also felt that Clint should have hired a better dialect/accent coach for the non-Southern cast because some of the attempts at a Coastal Southerner accent were absolutely grating, like hearing the English/Aussie actors imitating Foghorn Leghorn. Spacey slips a lot too when he loses his cool and it also takes me out of the film.

Back to Cusack, my initial reaction was indifferent and I thought he played the arrogant NYC journalist as expected but when you see him interact with Savannah society he comes off as a midwest state college journalism student. I also felt that the romantic connection between him and Mandy (Allison Eastwood) was forced.

Looking back I think they should someone like Edward Norton, Josh Hamilton, or Chris Eigeman
