Loved this film, severely underrated.

Sure, Twilight contained nothing particularly novel but it hearkened back to film noirs of yesteryear rather well, and it was enjoyable seeing a veteran (but still very able-bodied) Newman in this sort of quasi-tough guy, ex-policeman role. I loved the film stylistically too, it had a Clint Eastwood-directed sort of vibe to it; classical storytelling, with some nice shots and an agreeable soundtrack. An absolutely terrific cast is on board here too, M. Emmet Walsh appears so fleetingly but it's still memorable and James Garner and Paul Newman share such an easy rapport as former partners. Hackman and Sarandon are (as usual) rock solid as a pair of secretive, wealthy Hollywood stars. A great little mystery film this, and certainly worth checking out. I'll revisit this film quite regularly, I must say.

Great acting but the plot was sort of predictable in a noirish way.

Its that man again!!

I don't think he even speaks ... just gasps and groans a bit.🐭

I felt it was very close to a great film, but came up short. Just a piece here and a piece there missing, and the overall effect becomes mediocre.

I also think most of the cast didn't perform up to their own capabilities, except for Hackman, Garner, and Martindale (who I felt were all very good).

Agree completely. Enjoyed the movie and still felt it was missing something. But what a cast!! Go through the top eleven listed and they're all great, and several have gone on to award-winning work in the years since. I would add Sarandon to your short list above.

Some of the other actors weren't quite given enough to work with.

The story is a throw-back to the Film Noir of the Raymond Chandler era, but it didn't quite do enough. The interpersonal relationships were more interesting than the "mystery".

Not the best throwback to classic film noirs, though it's a respectable effort. Overall, I'd say it's a solid film mostly because of its cast and fitting score.

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

Sounds interesting.
