How and WHY is this only a 6.8?

Seriously, this is one of the funniest films I have ever seen! 

reply

Yeah that surprised me, it's old and I'm rewatching it now and it's still funny, it has aged well.

Like the view? It's the only thing you'll be catching tonight

1997 is old? What are you? 18?

I agree, there are plenty of less-funny comedies with higher ratings. This one deserves well over a 7. I gave it a 9. It's one of my favorite comedies, and my favorite Jim Carrey flick.

reply

It's formulaic, with a token screenplay and terribly written characters played by average at best actors. That being said, Jim Carrey delivers one of the best comedic performances of all time. 7/10

reply

Agreed. And comedies generally do weaker than other genres. For some reason people can laugh their asses off while watching a movie and yet they will never rate it better than 8 because, for some unknown reason, there seems to be a rule that prevents you from rating a comedy higher than that. On the other side of the coin, dramas are always better rated, probably because people think "if I give this serious movie a bad rating people will think I am a simpleton that just didn't understand it".

When checking IMDb ratings in order to figure out if it is worth watching I mentally add +1 for comedies, +0.5 for horror movies and deduct 1 for dramas. If it is a series instead of a movie, I also deduct 1.

I agree it's more difficult to make a good comedy than a good drama but the writing in this movie was terrible. The clichés stack up throughout and the only saving grace was the fantastic Jim Carrey. I've seen a lot better comedy films, but not a better performance by a comedy actor. No way it deserves more than a 7.

I agree that Carey blows every other actor out of this movie, he's the centerpiece of every scene

reply

I gave it a 7. I think it's a good film, but not a great one. Love the outtakes, they're hilarious.

I started with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. My friend showed it to me, and I am glad he did, we both laughed our figurative buttockses off.

Then we stumbled upon the sequel, and we thought it was even funnier. (Although, having seen both numerous times, the first one is a bit more solid with more charm)

It was with Liar, Liar, that Jim Carrey had hit the jackpot, as we were concerned. It was even funnier than both previous movies put together - and I didn't even know that was possible. Couldn't WAIT for the next Jim Carrey movie!

...

Still waiting .. nothing else ever came even close to this movie's charm and funniness (if there is such a word).

The overacting is strong with this one.

reply

You say it like it's a bad thing.

reply

I agree! This movie is hilarious!

reply

I gave it a 1, and that's being generous

reply

Why did you watch the whole thing? I love people who give things ones...

reply

Changing my rating from a 6 to a 1 simply because of this thread.
