i believe this film was at one point intended to be the 3rd Conan movie King Conan. Due to various rights issues a lesser known literary barbarian was used.

of course i could be wrong

Let's remember Kull and Conan are both creations of Robert Howard, and according to IMDb, this started out as a third Conan flick. So I can agree with you about the similarities. It is a comic adventure, which the Kull story certainly was not, but we have what we have. It is watchable ona rainy day. I am not a Kevin Sorbo fan, so I watch it for Tia. Ah, that Tia! Every fan boy's wettest dream, no doubt.

The first Conan novel was an alteration of a Kull novel. The main difference is that Howard toned down Kull philosophy for Conan.

Since this movie is completely void of said philosophy, it is indeed very close from a Conan movie. (maybe even closer than a Kull movie)
