criminally underrated

maybe being a child of the 90's my nostalgia factor plays a role in this feeling, but how is this film a 5.5 & crap like Hostel & the remake of Last house on the left are rated higher? I just don't get it. The fascination with the new torture porn horror baffles me. IKWYDLS was genuinely scary, not just gruesome. The actors were competent, which is more than I can say for most horror movies nowadays. The suspense and fright were there throughout. It had nice small town scenery, and a decent soundtrack. I miss the days of movies like this, Scream, The Faculty, hell I'd even take Urban Legend over most mainstream horror films these days.

I was just out of high school by a few years when this and Scream came out so I could still relate to being that age. I loved both movies, I give Scream the nod for the better movie but I still love this one. I think it's a little funny to read some of the comments on other threads where they say they used to like this movie but not anymore. I think it's funny they'll put the blame on the movie itself instead them themselves. A movie doesn't change / age, it's immortalized on film forever, only a person can change with time. Kind of makes me laugh they don't even realize their the one who's changed, not the movie.

Yes but what’s happened is that they’ve grown up and realised that a good chunk of the film is ludicrous and poorly written. As a kid it works a charm, but as an adult you’re constantly like ‘wait, what?’

The killer reveal is uninspired and muddled, and in hindsight we’re asked to believe that a large man was able to quickly remove a corpse and a load of crabs from someone’s car trunk in a suburban area with nobody seeing. Then there are bizarre character moments like Barry suddenly grabbing Julie by the throat with barely a reaction from her boyfriend, and later he seriously believes that Freddie Prinz Jr, his goody two shoes best friend from school, is the one tormenting them 🤣

There are just too many dumb things that pull you out of the story, but there’s plenty to like about the film and I can see why kids love it. It’s very tame for a horror and probably could have been PG-13.

The iMDB rating has crept up to 5.8, personally I think that’s a fraction low and would just about bump it up to a 6.
