John Cusak Fight Scene

was surprisingly good. one of the more realistic fight scenes i've witnessed in a movie. i'm glad they didn't shy away from the violence either. good stuff

reply

And an obvious precursor/inspiration for Bourne and the re-booted Bond movies.

reply

I actually thought it was maybe the worst fight scene I have ever scene. It was the one part of the movie I didnt like. Look at Cusak's face during the fight. It was some of the worst overacting I ahave ever seen. It actually looks like a walkthrough of a fight.

I really liked this movie but literally thougth this was the worst fight scene I have ever seen.

reply

you obviously haven't seen undefeatable.

reply

haha undefeatable, the last fight is genius: "I'll keep an eye out for ya" haha

This is what I'm talking about. In less than 90 seconds, its either you, or the other guy, dead on the frickin ground.

He closed that fight out in less than 1 minute.

For folks who think the fight is bad, this is closer to a real flight than that matrix wire fu bullship

People are always givin' me guns.

reply

I disagree, genuine fights are not moments of subtlety and no one looks as though they are appropriately exerting themselves. A good fight scene is gritty and very ugly--there's no room for finesse.

reply

Why don't the Hollywood Israelis give up on this Piven person..........geez!

reply

The shootouts had humour in them, the way they fighted was kind of funny and that was the point. No one in their right mind would waste bullets the way they do specially not a trained assassin that should have some form of weapons training.

reply

you would be surprised at how many bullets are actually wasted in shootouts even between expert shooters for instance
most ammo spent in a battle field is actually a miss because its mostly cover fire(standing behind a wall shooting at someone who is shooting at you) so that someone else can position themselves to get a kill shot

reply

Bullets are really cheap so why not let them loose.

Anyway, earlier in the film, Marcella is having trouble with an order of 3000 rounds. So that's about $750. He can afford it.

reply

I thought it was a fantastic fight as well. One of my friends said it wasn't realistic at all...I invited him to my Boxing/Kickboxing/Ultimate fighting training and showed him how we spar and fight. He never said anything about the fight scene again. That was after him watching competition fighting too, not even real street fighting.

Also, If you got a street fight between two highly trained killers, it will still look very messy, even if they are throwin out moves the average person could never do. The pen thing was awesome.

PS: I'm sure many people know this, but for those who don't, John Cusak had been taking kickboxing for around 15 years before this was even released. I read the guy he fought in that scene was one of his teachers.

reply

yeah, felix la pubel was his actual instructor in real life. so they were able to really go for it, knowing each other long enough to know what works....

it is an awesome fight scene that no matter how often i see it makes me wince, the energy alone is hardcore...damn good.

Robert Paulson.... j/k

that was Benny the Jet

reply

Benny the Jet Urquidez had a professional documented record of 49-1-1 with 35 knockouts and an un-documented record of 59-1-2-2.

He was the real deal.

reply

That was Benny the Jet. Other people pointed out his fight record. I'm familiar with his reputation, but had never seen his fights since he retired in the early 90s, so I never recognized him, but he's a legit fighter. Cusack has a 6th degree black belt from Benny's school.

4th wall break inside a 4th wall break... that's like 16 walls!

reply

That fight scene is one of the only movie fight scenes that captures that gripping, animalistic fight-to-the death tension.

reply

I wouldn't say one of the only, it's very good though, and Benny Urquidez is top notch in it. The improvised weapon of the pen was simply fanrastic, it was very satisfying.

"Bulls**t MR.Han Man!!"--Jim Kelly in Enter the Dragon

reply

This fight is far superior to the silly chop-action hyperfights you see in so many movies today... this is what a real fight between two killers would look like... it was filmed at real speed so you could actually see what was going on... for another good example see the men's room brawl in The Warriors...

reply

Anyone who has ever been in a fight or watched REAL fights will watch this fight scene and laugh. It was horrible. Some movies go for the realistic fight scenes and some go fro the cool looking ones that excite the common fan. This was neither. Again, look at some of the faces he makes. Its horrible.

reply

I think it's an awesome fight scene, and I only really watch films with fight scenes in. I always watch it twice in this film. The kick to get the gun out of the spooks hand is superb. I'm not really looking at either face, I'm looking at how they move, both weary of each other, not wanting to get close until the other guy starts to wear out and makes a go for Cusack. I seriously doubt that if I was in a fight to the death (which this surely was) I'd make sure I had the right expression, I'd be trying to kill the guy!

I think Cusack should do more killing films, I reckon he's a natural.

reply

What did your facial expressions look like when an assassin was trying to kill you?

reply

What you saw in this film are two seasoned fighters who are familiar with professional techniques and moves fighting each other in real time. I'm guessing you were expecting is the pants-grabbing, shoulder-leaning fisticuffs you had in high school. Protip: That's not real fighting.

reply

Great fight scene. It doesn't look choreographed at all.

Nobody cares what kind of faces you're making when somebody's hunting you down. It's either kill, or be killed. The pen maneuver shows how quick the fight can end.

"Tell me, friend, can you ask for anything more?" -- The Wrestler

reply

Agreed. I thought it was very well done. The action in the movie as was mentioned is fairly comical, but the fight scene just pops out of nowhere, it's very hard-hitting and well choreographed, and then it ends just as fast.

reply

I'd say this is possibly the best fight scene in a non martial film I've seen.

reply

you actually have no idea what your talking about
benny urquidez(felix la pubel)is one of the greatest kickboxers in history and choreographed this fight scene to match up what to trained people would do in a fight

reply

why would i wanna be in a fight or watch a real fight?

reply

Best Fight scene in a movie ever? The timign and the way it errupts when Felix walks in the corridor. This is surely hwo two trained killers woudl fight each other. No round house kicks just down and dirty body blows.

"I hate em when they ain't been shaved"

reply

Cool movie fight scene but with all the high kicks it's like no serious fight I ever saw or was involved in. It's all much faster and messier. There's never enough time or space.

Considering when it was shot though it was good in having a gritty finish with some ground fighting and then the pen scene.

reply

both people in the fight scene are highly skilled kickboxers

this is how a fight between to kickboxers would appear if it was life or death

benny the jet urquidez(felix) taught john cusack everything he knows and
benny has trained in 9 different systems of martial arts
judo, kajukenbo, shotokan, taekwondo, lima lama, white crane kung fu, jujutsu, aikido, and karate. and created his own system of martial arts called Ukidokan Karate

Aw, come on... I don't care what anyone says, it's a totally brilliant scene and works for these reasons:

1. Hollywood big actor film... expecting false and lame over-the-top crap.

2. Given the feel of the movie up to that point, you are more expecting some kind of comedy fight.

3. The instantanousness of it... this was what you were waiting for and, at this point, you were probably wondering if, probably thinking that... you weren't going to get it... and suddenly you're BANG! in the middle of it.

4. Cusack suddenly comes alive... suddenly he's the trained killer he's supposed to be, the one you were wondering if he actually WAS. I was thinking "can he pull this off?", is this gonna work??? and suprised to find it was, and cooly too.

Watching it again though make it seem a little more choreographed but not by much... but that's not the point, initial impact is what it's all about obviously, and they got it. It's a top scene. It catches you sleeping and smacks you awake. Great stuff! It does decrease if you watch it again I admit (doesn't everthing?), but after the first time you're already hooked.

reply

Man, I just watched this movie for the fifth or sixth time and that fight scene really holds up. Easily one of the top five movie fights for me. The first time I watched the movie I had to scoop my jaw up off the floor after that fight. Perfect.

Probably my favourite fight scene from a 90's movie. Couple of jumping high kicks that are sorta goofy, but again...it's the 90's, what'cha gonna do ^^

Snatching after us who smote them, brother,
Pawing us who dealt them war and madness.

reply

One thing I especially liked about the fight was the use of open hand strikes. You can't punch a guy in the face with a closed fist multiple times without breaking knuckles. I like that Cusack (as the writer of the movie) thought it through. Even if you don't like the fight per se, you can see it was well developed.
Personally, I like that Cusack has had the chance to go round with the best. Benny 'the Jet' Urquidez is possibly the greatest pound for pound kickboxer ever, and in Say Anything... Cusack gets to spar with Don "the Dragon" Wilson, another class act fighter.
One of my all time favorites, but then, I do love hitman movies.

1. Being moody.
2. Being bad at maths.
3. Being sad.

reply

I liked the fight, but I am a bit miffed at the people who said the fight was horrible because the facial expressions were wrong. Who cares about facial expressions looking good in a fight to the death? I don't, unless the facial expressions are really goofy looking.
