Do Americans like this film????

I love this film, but as most Brits know that Americans have a very different sense of humour (not prejudice in anyway my Aunty is American).

Just this film is made up of very British humour and was just curious to see if Americans enjoyed it as much as us Brits?

im canadian and i love it. but i love like monty python and stuff as well. i used to live in britain too so its cool. but this movie is awesome

I thought the movie was a scream.

Hopelessly in love with Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Emmy Rossum

As you might say, I'm a Yank from across the pond and I thought it was hysterical. It took a few viewings and/or some research to understand all the humor only because some of the accents were "thick" to my American ears and some of the slang I had not heard before. But I love UK humor and love this movie. Spaced was also very good. And of course, all my friends at Werner-Hogg. (sic?)

Cheers.

reply

I don't really consider it "UK humor." It's universal humor, a universal story. I loved it.

America pretty well embraced it. It was even made into a Broadway musical. To my knowledge, everyone I know (here in the U.S.) who's seen it has liked it.

I just watched it last night on tv after my boyfriend whos from Ireland told me to see it! LOL it was so funny! I didn't know it was going to be such a touching story about unemployed men. I couldn't stop laughing! I've been loving the British humor! There's some I can find affensive, but that's just their humor.

Most of the UK and Ireland films are so purely made. It's great so see something that doesn't have any Hollywood influence on it. We have too much of that here in America!! Great cast, great film for all adults who like some cheering up during unemployment times in their life. Like me for awhile.. but I wouldn't dare do what the men did in that movie! They had a lot of guts.. way to go! LOL

I'm American and I thought this movie was hilarious.

Count me among the Yanks who love this movie. It contains some truly memorable scenes.

Among the funny ones, the scene where the guys are standing in line at the (unemployment?) office and then gradually start dancing to the music makes me laugh every time I see it.

And while it seems like a comedy, it is a lot more, and the not so funny stuff is very well done also.

Fame was like a drug. But what was even more like a drug were the drugs.

I am American and love English humor. My daughter & son-in-law and granddaughter live there and a few years ago, my daughter sent my husband & I the whole series on FR.TED.. This series was so hilarious, we both loved it. I also love "Absolutely Fabulous". I contribute to our local PBS channel here in the States, to support their showing of English comedy. I also love Amnerican comedy like "TWO AND A HALF MEN". keep'EM COMING!

... since we're recommending... try to get the Knowledge http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082624/. Nigel Hawthorne, who is well known from 'Yes Minister'. Very good movie, and not very well known. It's about a bunch of Londoner's trying to pass 'the Knowledge' - the London Taxi Licence.

I'm American and I loved it. I own it on DVD as well as on VHS. I love British humor.

El Paso, Texas...ever heard of it?

reply

Very funny movie. My wife likes it so much that she purchased the VHS copy in 98 and last year bought the DVD. We live in Idaho.

This slightly deaf American loves the Monty. I was glad to get the DVD so I could watch it with subtitles. It was worse than a Guy Richie film for accents and slang. So it took a little work. No problem. I was richly rewarded. I also used the subs on the second POTC movie (Depp mumbles) and A HARD DAY'S NIGHT. Kids, they're not lying about playing your headphones too loud. Trust me.

I'm American and this is one of my favorite movies ever!
However, I do know some people who've seen it and not understood the laughs, the accents or whatever. It does seem to be a pattern that people who enjoy this movie also like other British comedies, such as the Pythons, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder...etc. I think over here you've got to have the right mindset in order to appreciate it.

No lie, as a chick outta Jersey, I think this is one of the most hysterical movies ever made. End of story.
