Anyone else think this is one of Depp's best...

& most underrated performances??

I know when people think of Johnny Depp, they think any # of his roles in Tim Burton's movies or of course Captain Jack, & don't get me wrong he was great in all those, however having said all that I really wish people would give him more credit and recognize his great acting chops for Donnie Brasco.

I know I'm gonna be in the minority on this, but I truly believe his portrayal of Joe Pistone was one his top 3 performances ever.

To me the scene where he and his wife see a therapist was a scene where Depp really showed just how great of an actor he really is. Especially when his wife threatens to leave him after the visit to the shrink. You truly felt his anger.

I agree, Johnny was brilliant in Ed Wood, one of my favourite movies. He was also good in this though.

The OP said it is one of Depp's best and not his best.

I totally agree! Depp's performance was outstanding in this movie and it's def one of his best.

I thought he was miscast. How can anyone believe he could hurt someone using Those little hands of his. In the movie he never actually hit anyone with his fists.

Most little guys that I know would pick up a bat or some other weapon and hurt someone with that and not with their baby hands.

I think he is a good actor but hitting someone with his hands not very believable.

It absolutely is. His performance in Donnie Brasco is either my favorite, or the one I admire the most. He delivered a remarkable, understated performance that was totally convincing and far more engaging than a lot of the stuff he's known for. And yeah, I even thought his acting was slightly better than Pacino's here.

I'm not the biggest fan of Depp (especially not these days), but some of his work is definitely praiseworthy. It would be great to see him in more dramatic roles like this one, instead of continually playing goofballs.

Listen man. Don't worry about my green funk.

Totally agree. Depp's best performance. One of my top ten films of all time. I much prefer this type of performance from Depp to the silly stuff he does in Burton films or the Pirates. Loved him in Blow too.

Nah, I'd go with either Private Resort or The Nightmare on Elm St
