Similarities to "The Matrix" (1999).

Besides both films of course being within the realms of the fantasy genre and both star Keanu Reeves, did anyone think that this film and "The Matrix" released two years later have few things in common?

Namely, how both films tend to deal with similar topics such as the question of free will and whether or not there are some or other kind of "forces" that tend to control reality and our lives, in this film it happens to be The Devil and his minions disguised as a first class lawyer and in The Matrix it happens to be the "Agents" and the machines and whatnot. Both films tend to question our reality as well. And both films put supernatural and fantasy twists on the many very familiar aspects of our lives, with TDA being sort of a supernatural horror/thriller and legal drama hybrid and The Matrix being a sci-fi action thriller fantasy film.

Anyone else thought that? Oh and there are differences perhaps too, but still... Also, in both films, Keanu Reeves' character is a very flawed human being who makes morally questionable choices in order to come out victorious. Here, he goes over the top to defend some guilty clients using questionable and morally dubious techniques but he also pays the price for it. In The Matrix, he is also a computer hacker and although yeah he later fights bad guys but like those cops in the building he had to kill, makes questionable choices too. And redemption also seems to be a theme in both movies.
