Why was Milton able to enter a church?

In "The Omen", Damien hated churches.

Stacy: Yeah

Stacy:...The forever kind

That was "The Omen". This is a different film. Satan & his 'group' are represented differently in each movie, there are no 'rules'.

True, but even in this film there has to be a "reason", within the universe of this movie. I noticed he was only in the entryway (atrium) of the church. Not the church proper with everyone else.

Every part of the traditional design of a church (sanctuary, apse, narthex, bema, catreda, nave) has meaning: symbolic/traditional/spiritual/biblical.

So, what does it mean when the devil can enter as far as the atrium of a church?

Actually, if you remember, Milton walked Barzoom's family right down to the front of the church at the beginning of the scene.

reply

That could have been a similar projection as when Milt is seen in court while he's raping M-A.

Maybe Milt takes some masochistic pleasure from being inside a church, seeing as how he grins when he dips his finger in the fount and the holy water boils around it.

The film may just not be following the 'rules'.

After all, there is no real-life (in terms of the Bible or any religious writing) that states Satan cannot enter a church. Man created that ASSUMPTION.

reply

Why would a church be off limits to the greatest sinner of all? I would think the church would/should be MOST welcoming to Satan.

Indeed.^

What church was this, anyway? Was it a real location, or a set?

reply

I only ask about the location because I wonder how they got a naked woman in a church. A real church would not likely permit that.

She wasn't naked. She walked in wearing a huge comforter.

This is NYC. People do all kinds of weird things there, plus Mary Ann was in no condition to even notice people staring at her.

Did you only see an edited for TV version? She takes the comforter off!

No I did see that version.
But someone said she walked IN naked. I said she didn't...she wore a comforter.

When they make movies they *build* sets.

reply

They do sometimes, yes.

But often for churches, they use a real one. I say, why not?

Nakedness isn't a sin.

reply

Actually, it's the reverse - they often build sets, and sometimes use real ones. :) You'd be surprised just how often sets are built rather than actual locations used.

And no, nakedness is not a sin, but they would still need permission to shoot in a real church and it's very unlikely that a real church would give them permission.

reply

Central Presbyterian Church in Manhattan was used as location for the funeral. I'm sure the scene where Mary Ann removes her blanket was done in the studio. Charlize Theron weighed heavily the decision to do nudity, and I guarantee it was done in a closed set.

reply

Why would it be done on a closed set??
There's nothing shameful about nudity, for one thing. Second, I've seen gory scenes, never mind nude ones, filmed in actual churches.

How hard would it be to get permission to film in a church, especially these days.

Good question. I think of it more in the terms of the movie with Schwarzenegger..was it called End of Days? or something like that? Gabriel Byrne played the devil and he was going after the woman designated to mother the anti-christ. When they were hiding in a churhc he appeared. One of the clergy asked how he could be in a church. The devil replied something to the effect of: "I can endure the pain" as he then proceeded to murder those protecting the woman.

"Mankind cannot solve the world's problems. Mankind is the problem."

reply

Some people say that the Catholic Church is the Church of Satan so it would make sense that he would be able to enter the church. If you notice the entire place was full with his followers so it sure looked like it was set up to be his church.

reply

Because it's just a building.

reply

Lucifer is an Angel, so why couldn't he be in a Church?

reply

If we include "The Omen", you can say Damien was a child so he had no self-control. Milton is an adult so he wouldn't throw a tantrum or get nervous about being in a church.

reply

A church is not in itself holy but the spirit in it. There are actual accounts of luciferianism infiltrating the Vatican. It would explain a lot research Malachi Martin.
