Melvin Gibson's Finest Performance?

My Jew blood has trouble admitting this, but I watched a few minutes of this on cable and had to finish watching it. Gibson's pretty amazing in it - nervous, twitchy, and really makes you believe what could have been a ridiculous role.
Shame he's such a maniac.

I would have to say that his performance in Braveheart would have to be his best ever. However, like some of the other posters mentioned, I believe he was perfectly cast for this role. Mel also did well in Payback and more recently, Edge of Darkness.

Your "Jew Blood"? Oh LOL.

in my opinion it doesnt matter whether he is a racist or not personally i dont think he is a racist and people only look at the bad side of others. mel gibson is one of the most talented actors in hollywood but because he aint one of the beautiful people he aint recognised

"but because he aint one of the beautiful people he aint recognised "

What on earth are you suggesting here ? Mel Gibson's appearance has nothing to do with anything. He's a highly successful writer/director/actor working in an industry smothered with greedy parasites (studio executives) and deranged narcissists (actors). He is most likely sick of the BS that he has to put up with and unfortunately let his feelings be known when he was drunk.

His drunkedness and the remarks he made have been blown out of proportion and should not detract from the man himself and what he's achieved.

He wasn't given the recognition he deserved for movies like Hamlet or Braveheart, because everyone typecast him as an "action star," because he was so fcking good in movies like The Road Warrior and Lethal Weapon. How sad is that?

Exactly.

Braveheart won Best Pic/Director. Well, hells bells. He was the main star. He should have been at least nominated for best actor.

There are a ton of films in which he should have been nominated, esp. this one.

That scene in Braveheart where he is fooled by Robert the Bruce, the look on Mel's face was priceless. His Lethal Weapon opening with the gun, good god, it's so powerful. He's a brilliant actor and crier, tee hee.

He can act circles around anyone and do Shakespeare like no other. Oh, that look on his face when he sees his father...so real. I could write a book on the brilliance of Mel's acting chops.

I would say it's one of his best performances, it's unique because it's not his usual tough/rugged type of character.

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

I totally disagree. I am actually a big fan of Gibson's acting but here I thought he was way out of his element. his performance seemed forced and often cam across as campy to me. couple this with the fact that there was absolutely no chemistry between him and Roberts and this flick is a fail. Great cast, not so great Mel, bad film.

I believe this is my favorite Mel Gibson movie. And yes, his performance was genius. I too was very saddened to have seen and read of his horrible rants and had lost interest in paying to see anything new he is in.

But since writing the original version of this post, I have been doing some research in the on-line articles about him and acknowledge that he has asked for forgiveness many times and I think I am ready now to forgive - but not to forget.

I hope he will get better.

Maybe this is the price of that genius.

reply

I actually like Hamlet best, closely followed by Gallipoli.

I read once that Gibson is bipolar and the reason for his rant was that he wanted the cop to shoot him (depression + alcohol - another depressant could make one suicidal). That would explain why he would be spewing anti-Semitic epithets and then needling the cop about whether he was a Jew. It could also explain his mood swings toward his ex wife.

I, for one, am willing to forgive and forget...especially if his problem could be clinical.

Just a thought.

Who the F are you to forgive or forget?

Mel was the perfect fit for Jerry, but the character himself becomes so frustrating through the movie with all his unfinished rambling sentences and funny noises and habits, as Alice herself acknowledges.

reply

I know it gets frustrating. But, this is like Mel's version of Rain Man. Yet, he didn't get the same reception Dustin Hoffman got unfortunately.
