Melvin Gibson's Finest Performance?

My Jew blood has trouble admitting this, but I watched a few minutes of this on cable and had to finish watching it. Gibson's pretty amazing in it - nervous, twitchy, and really makes you believe what could have been a ridiculous role.
Shame he's such a maniac.

Ill ignore the last sentece and yes i do agree that this is his best work.

reply

I won't ignore the last sentence but say instead that perhaps because he's a maniac he plays one so well....
I agree, this is one of his best performances because it's a role that I think was meant for him.

Good early performance of his is "Tim" with Piper Laurie.

I didn't mean a literal maniac... I meant manic energy, I should've been more specific I guess.

I guess I can't say absolute finest, but one of them. I enjoyed the whole story line & the relationships. Good movie, good entertainment.

He's not really a jew hating catholic. at least not in public life.

Alcomohol does funny things to people and makes them act out of character. Doesn't mean they are that person.

When I was drunk once, I said I was going to rob a store. Does that mean I am a thief? No. I have never stolen anything in my life. I agree with the last poster. Alcohol makes you say stupid things and they're not always true.

Regardless of his personal life, he is a great actor and one of the best in the history of Hollywood. I agree this was one of his best performances. It's hard to fake nervousness and paranoia. He was very convincing...

AGREE

The problem is that he played exactly the same sort of character in lethal weapon.

Except when he played that character you actually thought he could kill someone.

I completely agree. I am so sick of people claiming that Mel Gibosn is anti-Semitic just because he said some crazy things while he was drunk. It is an over-used and completely baseless accusation. And, yeah, he's a fabulous actor. Every time I watch his movies, I'm amazed at his talent.

I agree!

i was very impressed by his performance. he did a great job of playing this character. he would spatter off dialogue and different thoughts in 20 different directions. you could really feel the paranoia without being cartoonish.

reply

Didn't expect so many Mel defenders. I've said some stupid, stupid stuff when drunk. But I feel like those who shout out racist stuff when drunk are likely still thinking or feeling it when sober. But I lay no claims to know the man.

Now re: the movie. Feel like this role is actually different than Lethal Weapon. He's more unhinged and passionate here, and totally invested in the role. Wish he did more nutty parts like this.

When I was really drunk a black friend of mine and I got into a little scuffle and I ended up saying, well, it doesnt take a genius to figure it out. I know the situation i obviously a little different, but when your blood is up and you are that drunk you ARE a different person.

He was and I was, the next day we both had some bruises but it was nothing permanant and we are still very good friends to this day. We both knew that it was the alcohol talking and punching for the both of us that night. Now we know our limits alot better and It hasnt happened since

The thing is with social media being as diverse and widespread as it is, we're all exposed to these horrible words and thoughts all the time. I'm sure Mel has heard a lot racial slander over the years. All of a sudden after Passion, Mel was being put under a lot stress. The Jewish community was coming down hard. He was being forced to go on talk shows to defend his art and himself against a lot of angry attacks. What he said to the cop was a momentary thing brought on by drink, stress and frustration. He was being attacked before Passion even came out. For Christ's sake, I've heard Family Guy say far more offensive things about Jews.

I just watched this again last night on tv, and I was struck also by how great Gibson's performance was.

The guy really deserved an academy award for that role. He really nailed it.

Alcohol can also show one's true colors, especially someone who has been hiding them for a long time.

Anyway, he's pretty good in this movie. I'd have to pick Braveheart as his best performance though. For me. Well, he was pretty excellent in Ransom, too.

Best performance: A tie. Air America and Bird on the Wire.

reply

I really hope you do not believe Gibson to be anti semitic!

Gibson managed to make feel embarrassed for him, and his character.

So yeah he did a pretty good job

reply

By far his best performance...almost captivating.

Unfortunately the overall product tends to let him down or this could be a REALLY good film...
