Is the film any good?

I have never heard of this film before, i have read the plot to the story, it sounds very good but does the film itself bring any amusement?

reply

I was skeptic and, in fact, put off getting the DVD for a long time. Recently, though, I decided to give it a try and I am glad that I did. It's a very enjoyable movie and Phoenix and Vaughn give very good performances. The movie isn't as predictable as one would think and it keeps your attention throughout the whole thing. Bonds built between various characters is very unique as well and adds a bit of depth to the movie, at least in my opinion. I rate it an 8 or 8.5 out of 10. I strongly suggest that you at least rent it.

reply

I rented it after months of searching for it... I was very pleased. It was really good, funny but also kind of suspenseful. Well worth the rental!
You look so beautiful and peaceful, you almost look dead.

reply

Definitely worth a look. Personally, I loved it.

reply

It is a very funy movie, for me at least - and it's very well acted; and what I really value about it is that it's not some typicla story I've watched n-times before... :)

reply

i enjoyed it a lot. i was bored and was looking on tv... found it on ifc, thought to myself vince vaughn in a suspense, that sounds silly so i watched it... definitely a lot better then i thought it would be. love the dark comedy, joaquin phoenix was casted perfectly, it also had one of my favorite endings. i would highly recommend renting it. if you love it buy it, but its not a classic, and its a movie youd probably only wanna see only once or twice. i would give it an 8/10.

reply

I loved this film!! It is such a great dark comedy. Everyone in it gives a strong performance.

Don't yell at me, it's sounds like your problem. Not mine.

Love Clay Pigeons but its the kind of thing i only grew to love over this last year. For some reason this is one of the few movies I have that I can put on at nearly any time and at any place and just watch the rest of it from then on. like when its 2 am and i'm just gettin back from work, i can just throw it on without thinking about what i want to watch while getting ready for bed. and not care and i really don't know why that is. I mean I liked it quite a bit, but I was never in love with it, but now I love it and i frequently recommend it, and again its weird that i do cause its not like i'm a huge fan of either of the leads (i mean i like both of them well enough and all, swingers is one i always loved from the moment i saw it, and when people were talking about phoenix after walk the line came out i was like clay pigeons!!!! but again you know what i mean? its just strange the way certain movies can grow on you.)

I guess its just one of those movies, I like the way it was shot. the opening credits, the intro of clay finding the body, the foggy ending meet was nice, I like the way it was all put together, i like those strained plinking guitar chords playing when they're fishing, and over the scenes where he finds the bodies. like its strange. I even liked gorafalo (sp?) i remember it when it came out and left theaters very quickly in oct'98. i wanted to see it then, and i rented it when it came out and again i only thought it was all right then, and then like a year or so ago i kept stumbling across it on the tube. first on usa a couple of times in the course of a month, and then it was on bravo like every other night! seriously i'm not exaggerating, did that have no other movie in their library to run at the time becuase if you turned on bravo at like 3 or 4 in the morning in june or july of last year chances were good you saw part of this movie. so then when i found it for 8 bucks in virgin i was like man i guess i'm buying this,

so basically yes this must be a good movie if i'm watching it a number of times, i have better movies that i liked more, i know this because i've seen them so why am i watching this again??? i don;t really know, i just like it, i always hated it when people say that without any reason so here's mine, apparantly its a really re watchable movie! damn now i wish i hadn't loaned it out to my friend last night so that i could watch it again tonight. meh its like when you get stuck on one particular cd sometimes you just gotta take it out and get stuck on another cd for a while. take that broken flowers soundtrack! oh well tonight'll be ghost dog then. viva jim jarmusch! and david dwobkin apparantly. (this dwobkin is the guy who directed wedding crashers? really the same guy???it was good but i was tired of it before it was over when i saw it the first time, couldn't really imagine wanting to see it again though i prob will at some point, eeee must be same guy, becuase he worked with vaughn here and wilson in shanghai nights bringing up an even better question--this is the same guy who did this did shanghai knights?!?!?!? what? sahanghai knights are you kidding me? does this mean i should see it now, i think i might have actually seen it. or was that the first one. man i can't even remember ok i gotta stop now.)

so def try it out clay p if you havn't yet, you might be surprised.

sorry...i get carried away, and distracted by other thoughts easily--and yes that's an understatement.

reply

but its becuase i actually care about what i write and what gets posted ya know?

clay pigeons is good--i wish i hadn't loaned it out just so i could watch it again and fall asleep.

you all ever see The Ice Harvest. that one's pretty good too. simialrly themed.

Watched it tonight. It's a combination of comedy and suspense, and you're not sure which one you're going to do from scene to scene. Joaquin is awesome as the main character. Vince Vaughn doesn't quite reach chilling, but he certainly is entertaining in his role. Janene Garafalo plays her part perfectly. Her sidekick is funny and hot as hell -- in a wholesome sort of way :) The dude who plays the sheriff is very good. So is Barney. The first 10 minutes of the movie are memorable to say the least.

There are some REALLY FUNNY parts to it yes.

reply

Enjoyed it very much.

i taped this cos it was on late at night, however I missed the last 20 minutes or so (I know, how sucky)... so can anyone tell me how it ends? I was up to the part in the bar when Lester is chatting up Janene Garafalo ... or am I way off the ending?

reply

Lester is talking to Janene, and then in walks Kimberely. So he stops talking to Janene and walks away with Kimberely. Janene is kinda p'oed, and not too long after Lester leaves, she notices his broken-in-half cigarrete and realizes he's the serial killer. Then the movie switches over to the jailhouse where Barney takes Clay his food. Barney, being the stupid guy he is, walks all the way into the jail cell and while he's walking, Clay takes his gun and locks Barney in the cell. Then Clay takes Barney's car keys and drives outta there. Then it switches over to Janene and she's driving and telling her partner about Lester. Then she arrives at the jail house and finds Barney there with no sign of Clay. She leaves Barney in the cell and heads outta there. Then the movie switches over to Lester and Kimberely on a pier. They're talking. Clay shows up, and Lester expectedly isn't too happy. He's starts to tell Clay that the whole point of getting Clay off the hook is for Clay to stil be in jail when another killing happens (but obviously Clay is not going to let Lester kill Kimberly). Suddenly Lester holds a knife to Kimberly's neck and immediately Clay cocks the gun at Lester and tells Lester to let her go. Of course, Lester refuses. Lester then makes a move to try to truly slit Kimberly's throat, and Clay pulls the trigger. There are no shots fired and Lester proceeds to tell Clay that he emptied Barney's gun while Barney was asleep. After that, both of them hear Janene drive up, and Lester reminds Clay that if he goes down, Clay will go down with him. The camera switches over to Janene. Kimberely, crying and frightened, runs past her. Janene doesn't run after her, but runs to the pier and finds Clay alone and no cowboy-hatted Lester. She asks Clay which way did Lester go, and Clay intentionally points in the wrong direction. Janene believes him and runs that way. You can tell she's a little scared that he'll pop out, but he's not even over there. The camera pans back to Clay and then you see Lester leaning against a tree that's in the opposite direction of where Clay pointed. Clay walks away from Lester and leaves. Next day, I guess, Clay is moving out of his house and loading his truck. Janene drives over and gets out of her car. She tells Clay that "We're going to find him." Then she asks him if he has anything more to tell him. Clay says no. She tells him to take care and then she drives away. All of a sudden the phone rings in Clay's house. The movie doesn't show the phone conversation, but it's Lester telling Clay to meet him at this bar. Then they're at the bar and talking about different things. After the conversation, Lester leaves the bar. Outside, but acting casually, is the sheriff, in regular clothes. Lester obviously does not know he is the sheriff, and needs a ride. So he gets this ride. Note: the sheriff DOES know what the serial killer (Lester) looks like. So the sheriff and Lester ride away, and as they drive, several police cars follow them (it was a set up). Clay watches this happen and drives the opposite way. THE END.

Thanks bjcurry! I actually saw some other people's posts in older message boards regarding the ending, however yours was more comprehensive and fills in the gaps alot better.
Now I feel I get the sense of completeness and I won't have to hunt it down on DVD/video to watch!

ur welcome :)

I missed the last few minutes of the movie too. Thanks for a good summary.

Pretty good movie. One of Vince Vaughn's best performances, if not the best.

Cool.

It will certainly keep your attention! Many here before me have already expressed my thoughts and then some!
I highly recommend it if anyone hasn't seen it. Vince Vaughn will surprise you if you have only seen him in comedies.
