shareOne of the best movies, I have ever seen.
I hope the previous sentence conveys all I want to say about the movie.
i find "the white balloon" to be very similar to this movie.
shareIn my experience it seems well-nigh impossible to predict what film someone else will enjoy. I have seen many a film recommended to me by friends, after which i could just wonder what would make them think i would like this film?? Sometimes i can't predict what my own wife will like, and we've been married for 23 years!
So just knowing that you liked this film, is not nearly enough to make a likely prediction for another film. BUT, having said all that,
I think it is fairly likely that you will enjoy COLOR OF PARADISE by the same director. It also has wonderful child actors, a tormented, but well-meaning father, similar themes of sin and redemption, harmony with nature and God. . . .
a magnificent film.
along those lines, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, is a parable of love within a family that transcends even the most cruel of circumstances in Italy under Nazi occupation. Roberto Benigni's portrayal of the father is both hilarious and heart-breakingly beautiful.
A much darker, yet poignant and unforgetable film is YOL, a Turkish film, that shares with the films above a deep immersion into culture and family bonds
And now I am really going out on a limb, by recommending ALPINE FIRE, a Swiss movie ,featuring a family living in a remote farm high in the Alps. The love between the deaf-mute boy and his older sister intersects with breath-taking images of the mountain scape
Finally, the most captivating portrayal of a 12-year-old girl, that I have seen on screen, is by Keisha Castle-Hughes in WHALE RIDER, a heart-warming movie from New Zealand.
Another great film with non-actors - "Not One Less" by Zhang Yimou. It's about a rural school in China, a simple and moving tale.

A great American movie presented from a children's point of view, and with many magical moments, is Night of the Hunter.

It is probably very hard to mention another film that touched me so much, It was so poignant and heart-rending. I saw it sitting with my mother and both of us were trying to hide our tears from each other.
I can tell the name of another film that also made me emotional. it's stepmom.
Two films came to mind immediately as I watched CHILDREN OF HEAVEN.
The first is THE RED BALLOON -- I'm shocked that no one else mentioned this film. A short French film, it, too, is practically free of dialogue, and the subtlety and sense of real culture being filmed make this required viewing for me.
The second is the American film THE BLACK STALLION. Gorgeous, affecting and unlike other films of the time, this will enchant viewers because we truly relate to the young protagonist and dialogue in the film seems so secondary to the visual and emotional beauty of this film. I could easily say the same for THE RED BALLOON and CHILDREN OF HEAVEN.
