Good film but one thing that sort of bugs me

Have seen this film plenty of times and really like it, but one thing that kind of bugs me after a recent rewatch is how Jeff after witnessing the same truck driver who took his wife away and is now acting like he's never seen Jeff before, doesn't make a point to the officer he pulls down and the police station that his wife has been kidnapped, rather than just missing. He seems more interested in harassing the bartender as well looking for his wife's name. It should have easily clicked that his wife has been kidnapped by the truck driver as soon as the truck driver starts lying to him. It should probably have also clicked that the other guys were in on it when they stopped earlier on and then left when the truck arrived.

Watch again it is not the same truck driver.

What do you mean? I'm talking about the J.T. Walsh character. The moment Jeff catches up with him driving his truck alone, and he starts lying to Jeff saying he's never met him or his wife before, Jeff should be onto the police about a kidnapping and probably shouldn't even waste time at the diner again. In fact, if that's how someone who was supposed to give my wife a ride to the nearest diner acted around me, when there was also no sign of my wife at the diner, I'd be following that driver as far as I can cause therein lies the answer to my wife's disappearance.
