whose son is Liam?

Anybody gave any thought to the possibility that in the film Liam can be actually Danny Flynn's son?

reply

No, because Liam is younger than 13 and Danny went to prison 14 years ago so it's impossible.

The first time I watched this movie, it never occurred to me that Liam might be Danny's son. I thought that the boy was about ten years old, so it did not seem like a possibility.

But then I started thinking about it and looking for evidence to support it. The actor who plays Maggie's son (from IMDB bio) would have been about thirteen during the filming, which would make him the right age, because Danny was in prison for fourteen years.

In the movie, it says that she married Danny's best friend. (He shows up in the deleted scenes). So it was possible that she was pregnant when Danny was imprisoned and his best-friend felt that it was his duty to marry the young pregnant woman. The society seemed pretty conservative so it might have been a scandal for her. She says to her father that her marriage was over before her son was born. Maybe implying that it had never really existed to begin with.

She tells Danny that it would take him fourteen years to understand what he did to her when he went away. If they were just teenagers dating, it would not be such a big deal. But it would be important if she has spent the interim raising a child, alone, because of his absence.

But, I do find this story line a bit like a soap opera; the film-maker wisely only hints at it. It would have taken away importance from other aspects of the film if there was more focus on it.

No. He's definitely the husband's son. There's no evidence at all for him to be Danny's, and as others have said, Danny's jail term is 14 years while Liam is 12.

reply

Yeah, this was never in question, throughout the whole film.

It's strange that people are so used to looking for some underlying meaning or twist.

Danny was in for the last 14 years, her husband wasn't.

No,No,No.....Liam's Father is an IRA soldier seving time in prison for defending his own country. In Ireland during TheTroubles...God,TheVatican,The Irish Catholic Church all meant something to people.
Hollywood and the filth that comes out of there has destroyed any decency the people of Ireland had within.I lived over there and people actually believe that movies are real life.

Also if would be romantic, Liam is son of the best friend of Danny which is imprisoned. Many times movie refers to these circumstances without examining. I think this was the better choice to make realistic the movie and more complicated the situation.
