What were they thinking with Vicki?

Horrible casting choice. All it did was mess up the dynamic. Those are some of the worst episodes. Rena Sofer seems to be the go to person when someone wants to ruin a show. You would think they would have learned after the first attempt to introduce a new character with Amy.

Yea, well the show was canceled that same season.

I completely agree, Vicki/Sofer were great.

Yeah. I, uh, had to dismember that guy with a trowel.

The Vicki episodes were not good. The show did not need to add a new character and, in my opinion, it hurt the show.

You seem to be the only one who does like her. If she's so great, why did the show get cancelled right after she showed up? And yes, that fake New York accent is just terrible, makes me cringe every time she talks. Hopefully that's the last anyone ever sees of her no-talent a$$!

I AGREE! I liked Rena I had no problem with her. The main reason why the show was canceled was because NBC moved it to Tuesday nights at 8:30 and in January 2003 it was up against American idol that everyone would rather watch a stupid realty show than a funny sitcom! and NBC took it off the air till the summer! So thats why JSM was canceled because of stupid american idol!!

reply

I don't know why everybody bags on Rena Sofer. She wasn't the perfect actress on JSM, but she was not terrible either. She was a WHOLE lot better than Tiffani Thiesen.

I remember a few of her episodes being quite funny...the one that comes to mind is, where Vicki and Finch are competing over who's more important to Jack. The scheming, trash talking, mind games and competition between the two was hilarious!

And the show, while great, HAD run it's course. It would have been the last season with or without her.

The dynamics of the show had already been ruined a few seasons earlier when they changed Finch from loveable loser sidekick to creepy sexual predator lead.

Compare episodes like 'Nina's Bikini', 'Finch On Ice' and 'Fast Times at Finchmont High' with the later seasons - 'Nina Van Grandma' comes to mind (an episode so unpleasant and sleazy as to be unwatchable).

Rena Sofer was fine and so was her character but that didn't hide the fact that she was a desperate attempt to breathe life into a dying show and she failed.

We will always have the first four seasons.

I didn't like Vicki either, found her character very annoying. I did like Gina Gershon's appearance as her sister though, lol!

reply

I wasn't a huge Vicki fan but I didn't hate her. I think the ratings were already in decline so they were trying to add a bit of spice by bringing Rena in. It didn't work not so much because of Rena but because the later episodes just didn't seem to be as well written as the earlier seasons. It also didn't help that they moved the shows time slot. The show needed better writing in the final season to be saved and it didn't get that, IMHO.

I'm rewatching s7 and man she is just awful. The character really ruins the show and her accent is god awful. It's not really the actress' fault, Vikki is just a crap character. They definitely didn't need her and she wasn't funny or entertaining.

I like the actress and the character.

I can't BELIEVE there's actually some "Vicky" supporters here!

OMG!

I'm normally not a sanctimonious viewer with my shows, but she effin' BLEEEEEEEEEEWWWW!

The cast was already taut and perfect as is. Adding a sixth character was as useful as adding a fifth wheel to a corvette.

Geez.

reply

I think what Jack was saying about bringing her in to the magazine was probably exactly what showrunners were hoping adding the character to the show would do. Something about things were getting stale and they needed some new blood.

reply

I loved this show but by the last season it did feel like it had run its course. And nothing personal against Rena Sofer but I hated the Vicki character. Some actors can pull off an accent like that but with her I never felt like I was watching a real person, just someone putting on a phoney Brooklynish accent.

reply

The last couple seasons before 7 really were throwing some gimmicky episodes at the viewers. I'm not surprised people started tuning out. Adding someone new shouldn't necessarily be gimmicky, but with her it felt like it was. Also yes her accent was pretty terrible!

reply

It seemed to me they knew that season was going to be the last. I doubt they anticipated a season 8. The series finale wrapped up the entire show perfectly.
