Would you want Begbie to be your friend?

I don't know how to judge Begbie. When he's in "normal mode" he seems to be a cool guy - a little bit harsh, but most likely a very loyal friend. Unfortunately, whenever he switches to his "crazy mode" which happens too often and too easily he's getting too unpredictable. Funny as it is, Renton, Spud and Sick Boy seem to admire the guy and be afraid of him at the same time. If you had a choice, would you add Begbie to your friends list?

I used to have a mate who was a little like Beggbie, but never did things to peoples faces. There was this time someone pushed in at the bar and he went outside and smashed their car up. Also if a bar or resturant weren't to his taste he would go in the bathroom and smash it up. He's doing time now, got caught smashing up a kfc bathroom cause the soda machine didn't have dr pepper lol

That story is absolutely ridiculous. Maybe I'm naive in thinking it could have been actually true, but if it was true, it's even more ridiculous for being true. I laughed when I read this story, LOL!

Hell no. The main problem with someone like Begbie isn't his violence in "crazy mode", it's the fact that his loyalty is completely unpredictable in that mode. Spud got cut for interfering and Renton almost lost his balls for making a joke.

I haven't had any friends that were truly crazy or violent like that. Luckily, I've never gotten close enough to anyone who had that kind of disposition. I do know one or two though, and in real life it's not really funny it's just kind of awkward and they do tend to be total knobs.

I would absolutely not want a friend like Begbie. I only truly befriend or spend time with people I can fully trust, which is the polar opposite of Begbie. When I was younger I thought it would be cool to either be friends with, or at least on the same side as someone dangerous and widely feared, or to even be that person, but as I've gotten older and met a variety of people, my opinions have drastically changed.

There's nothing remotely "cool" about Begbie - the dude was a walking nightmare. One of the most odious characters ever put on film. It's a testament to Robert Carlyle's skills as an actor that I hated the character so much (one year later, he'd play the insanely likable Gaz in "The Full Monty" - a versatile, underrated actor IMO).

Without you, today's emotions would be the scurf of yesterday's.

In the book, it said that Begbie would beat up any poor slob that accidentally pissed him off, but if somebody Begbie knew started to bully one of his other friends, Begbie would actually join in. In other words, he did not back up his mates.

I wouldn't be friends with any of the, to be honest. They all seemed to destructive.

Nah, cause for one, he is very likely to beat me up.

When you get to know some real life Begbies, then you'll know how cool it is to have them with you. I thank my lucky stars that everyone I knew in my life are now dead or in jail.
