What kind of self-respecting super-hero...

What kind of self-respecting super-hero would carry guns? I mean, seriously? I saw this movie finally on HBO yesterday and this just struck me as absurb.

Um... hello. He's wearing a purple spandex suit and you are concerned about guns taking away his self respect? I don't think a single iota of this movie should be taken seriously.

An accurate depiction of The Phantom.

That would do far more to his self-respect than to carry guns.

Guns are ok in this genre; The Phantom was more 30's adventure story (where a Colt 1911 is a required accessory for the hero) than superhero flick. He just happens to wear purple tights.
Sure, if he wore khaki slacks and a faded bomber jacket it'd fit better, but then you lose the mysterious "ghost who walks" angle.

He carries guns because he's The Phantom!

I also think it's okay for him to have guns, it's not like Batman, where there's a deep seated psychological reason behind why he doesn't use guns. And even Batman as young Bruce Wayne considered it before he realized it would make him just like the man that killed his father.

Phantom didn't have a similar gun-related trauma, so as a human vigilante against other armed men, it completely makes sense for him to use them, at least non-lethally (as much as you can with a gun), as without, he's going to be at a massive disadvantage, and as other users have remarked, he doesn't have the knack for invention and maybe not the resources for gadgetry as Batman.

I haven't read every single comment in this thread, so maybe someone has already pointed this out: but the Phantom in the comic strips carried guns. Occam's Razor.

Also, I understand that in his early adventures, Batman carried a gun.
