Honestly one of the saddest scenes I've ever seen in a movie..

I've seen alot of movies, and I mean heartwrenching stuff like Schindler's List and so on. But that scene at the comedy club where he is totally humiliated and then has to take his date home . My God, the saddness is overwhelming . that scene makes me cry every time I see it, I feel so bad for him. Murphy really did an outstanding job there. It honestly comes to mind every time I think of tearjerker moments in movies. I saw this a long time ago and it still affects me...was suprised no one else had commented on it here. Occasionally when I see a very overweight person it comes to mind and it has made me more sympathetic to their pain I think.

Yeah, that scene was incredibly sad. I used to get teased alot as a child and watching that scene hit close to home.

I remember seeing that scene as a kid and at the time I was really struggling with my weight, it broke my heart.

Did anyone feel bad for the white guy who got mocked before Sherman for the colour of his skin? No? Why not? Maybe because the white guy just took it like a man and didn't feel sorry for himself whilst crying into his Twinkies.

reply

Maybe because that guy only had to deal with 1 or 2 jokes. Not a complete and never ending burn.

I got to see this as a free advanced screening. There were 900 people in the theater hooting and hollering at Chapelle's jokes, but you could hear a pin drop during Sherman's reaction. Very effective scene, and some truely great acting by Murphy through layers of makeup.

It's kind of funny, but I think Murphy did an excellent job humanizing Sherman. Many people could relate to his character's struggles with obesity and lack of confidence. You really feel bad for Sherman throughout the movie and you want what's best for him in the end.

I suppose I could pay my bills with blind kids' smiles. But their money is a lot easier.

I fully agree.

Agreed.

Very strong and well acted scene indeed.

It's one the of the few movie scenes that make me want to intervene and call out the bully for what he is doing.

Another such scene that comes to mind is the scene in 'A Beautiful Mind' where John Nash (played by Russell Crowe) walks across campus in his typical manner and this guy starts copying his walk behind him, with everyone laughing.

I saw what was coming as soon as the comedian made his first joke, and then you could see Sherman saw it coming too and I was dreading it, and then sure enough, I was so sad for him when it happened. It was even worse in the next scene when he's on the couch eating ice cream, after he'd spent the last week working out, and I was like nooooo.

:'(

Then I came looking for this thread and I'm glad there is one.

I gave 7 to the movie jsut becase of that... at least he gets his revenge as Buddy Love a little later... :D

Same here. It was Sherman's first date too, and it ended horribly. Nothing wrong with an insult comic, but you shouldn't put down someone in the audience who is actually there to enjoy themselves and the company they are with. It was very uncalled for. Which made Buddy Love's revenge even sweeter.
