Why was he not willing to let her go?

But he had girl friends before her and didn't kill them when they broke it off?

My opinion: the reason was that his previous girlfriends left on HIS (Bobby's) terms; unlike Stacy. Also, I believe the parents of the last girlfriend (Tracy) intervened in the situation (probably warning Bobby to stay away), which was why she was able to transfer schools.

These might be the reasons.

nathssr has some very good points there.

I also think that Bobby felt highly insulted and enraged that his first girlfriend 'left' him like that; he wasn't about to let any woman leave him ever again.
Maybe he wasn't as obsessed with his other girlfriends as he was with Stacy.

Lastly, I truly think the reason Bobby's friend says "Bobby's gone out with lots of girls. But nothing ever happened to them." is that THEY didn't put up with Bobby abusing them and left him early on, before he got possessive and obsessive.

"Define 'love'?"
"Love is when someone is a 'part' of you."

When Stacy broke it off with him, Bobby decided to get her out of the picture -- for good. He slit her throat, wrapped her body up in garbage bags, tied cylinder blocks to her body and sank her to the bottom of the lake. Bobby says that he and Stacy had a big fight and she took off and Stacy's family and friends believed it until Bobby's old roommate who had been brought along for the killing but didn't participate fessed up that Stacy's family and friends realized the truth.
