Hunchback broadway musical

So i've heard that THON is turning into a broadway show. Are you guys excited are do u think it'll just be an epic fail?

reply

And we have a cast

The casting is not that surprising both Page and Arden confirmed it ages ago and Renee was involved in the workshop.

This won't make Broadway next season, due to it being also part of the Paper Mill's season. But if the runs are successful I see no reason why it shouldn't transfer (I mean Aladdin didn't get great reviews out of town but it's doing good business in New York). I could actually help waiting till 2015 will help- at the very least it will give them time to solve any problems which occur.

Also ON STAGE CHOIR- Hell yeah

Menken and Schwartz interview, interesting quotes

The development of Hunchback for the stage, Menken says, has been "a steady evolution."

"It's emotionally deeper. We're liberated from needing to... reach the family audience as we did in animation. Even though I believe this can reach a family audience, this definitely lives much more on the adult side of Hunchback."

Yay, this is what I wanted.

We are bringing more nuance to the character of Frollo," the cathedral's archdeacon and Quasimodo's adoptive father, exploring "how Frollo became who he is, and the complexity inside him."

So Frollo is back to his original job from the book.

The current stage version, says Schwartz, has "a different ending" and about "ten new songs or pieces of songs." Some were in the European version, "and some we wrote specifically for this one."

Okay I still think Esmeralda isn't going to die in this version unlike the German one but hay it's intresting. On the songs Der Glöckner von Notre Dame song list is as;

Act I[21]
"Die Glocken Notre Dames" ("The Bells of Notre Dame") – Clopin, Archdeacon, Frollo & Chorus
"Zuflucht" ("Sanctuary") – Frollo, Quasimodo, Antoine, Charles & Loni
"Draußen" ("Out There") – Quasimodo
"Schneller, Schneller" ("Hurry, Hurry") - Gypsies
"Tanz auf dem Seil" ("Balancing Act") – Clopin, Esmeralda & Gypsies
"Schneller, Schneller II" ("Hurry, Hurry II") - Gypsies
"Ein bisschen Freude" ("Rest and Recreation") – Phoebus
"Schneller, Schneller III" ("Hurry, Hurry III") - Gypsies & Frollo
"Drunter drüber" ("Topsy Turvy") – Clopin, Quasimodo & Crowd
"Der Pilory" ("The Pillory") - Crowd
"Zuflucht II" ("Sanctuary II") - Frollo & Quasimodo
"Die Glocken Notre Dames II" ("The Bells of Notre Dame II") - Clopin, Priests
"Hilf den Verstoß'nen" ("God Help the Outcasts") – Esmeralda, Quasimodo & Parisians
"Hoch über der Welt" ("Top of the World") – Esmeralda, Quasimodo, Antoine, Charles & Loni
"Vor Das Licht des Himmels"("Before Heaven's Light") - Clopin & Esmeralda
"Das Licht des Himmels" ("Heaven's Light") – Quasimodo
"Das Feuer der Hölle" ("Hellfire") – Frollo & Priests
"Die Glocken Notre Dames III" ("The Bells of Notre Dame III") - Clopin & Frollo
"Finale Act 1" - Clopin & Chorus
"Esmeralda" – Frollo, Quasimodo, Phoebus, Esmeralda, Clopin & Soldiers

Act II

"Trommeln in der Stadt" ("City under Siege") – Clopin & Parisians
"Ein Mann wie du" ("A Guy Like You") – Antoine, Charles, Loni & Quasimodo
"Esmeralda (Reprise)" - Frollo
"Weil du liebst" ("Out of Love") – Quasimodo, Phoebus, Antoine, Charles & Loni
"Tanz der Zigeuner" ("Dance of the Gypsies") - Orchestra
"Weil du liebst reprise ("Out of Love reprise") – Phoebus, Esmeralda & Quasimodo
"Die Glocken Notre Dames IV" ("The Bells of Notre Dame IV") - Clopin & Frollo
"Zuflucht reprise" ("Sanctuary reprise") - Frollo
"Wie aus Stein" ("Made of Stone") – Quasimodo, Loni, Charles & Antoine
"Einmal" ("Someday") – Esmeralda, Phoebus & Parisians
"Finale Ultimo" ("Grand Finale") – Full Company

Of the ones written for the German production I think Esmeralda (it works thematically with the main characters singing about her) and Made Of Stone (its a fantastic 11o'clock number and was performed at D23) will definitely make it I think Dance of the Gypsies will be out (with Court of Miracles returning). I'm unsure on the rest. Someday was written for the film (played over the credits at the end) so I think it's remain.

For those interested here's a playlist of the German recording (it's missing Bell's of Notre Dame and Made of stone though);

Interesting read, but I'll just put the biggest news here;

The Gargoyles (and by extension A Guy Like You) are gone. Which is half surprising they were still involved in the German production, the only difference there was it was made clear that they were figments of Qusi's imagination. However I did not that they weren't any actors playing them when the cast was announced so I'm not really surprised.

Glad to see they kept some of the best #'s from the German Production, including Esmerelda and Out of Stone. Though I'm not sure how Out of Stone is going to work without the gargoyles.

I think there will be talking gargoyles, but they won't be individual characters. They will be part of the choir.

reply

Yep, that would work.

Just saw it live at the La Mirada Theater of Performing Arts. It was phenomenal.

I found it on YouTube and I have the CD of the cast recording. It's great! I wish they would bring it to Broadway! I guess the themes of genocide, lust, and religious hypocrisy are just too strong.
