This whole thing could have been avoided if...

Janie could have given the notebook back to Harriet when Marion handed it to her to read what was written about her. I like that at least with Sport, he really didn't want to know, but only knew because Marion said it out loud. Janie on the other hand read Harriet's private thoughts which is no different than being Marion.

I wholeheartedly agree, and I remember back then thinking that that was what was going to happen. I get that they're kids, but it never sat right with me that Marion not only made it easy enough for Janie to shut down her little game, but that Janie, as Harriet's best friend, didn't take the opportunity to shut it down. I was a bit disappointed that the whole plot ended up being based around anger over words written a notebook.

Maybe a better plot would have been Marion trying to STEAL the book and out Harriet. Or maybe Janie being curious and trying to nab the book from Harriet. We would've had a different movie of course, but in my opinion, it would've been better.

Yeah. I understand the anger at Harriet in that she actually thought those things about her friends, but it's like what Golly said. Sometimes to save the friendship, you have to tell a little white lie. Even though Harriet still meant what she wrote in her book, she could still apologize for them finding out about it and that their feelings were hurt.
