Just watched this for the first time...the week of Corey Haim's death but I don't think that is affecting my opinion.

Yes, it is "Die Hard in a High School" but it's still a LOT of fun. Haim does a great job as the lead (I'm not talking Oscar worthy, here...just fun)...the guy that plays the lead villain is also pretty cool. He reminds me of an Evil Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith fame). Alan Thicke and Dick Van Patten show up as well and both do fine jobs with their roles. Unless you are a douche who typecasts people in your mind, none of them are really horrible in their roles. Hell, I like the female FBI agent more than Scully from the X-Files, even though she's a bitch.

I was expecting a 'so bad it's good' type of experience but this was actually a nice little action flick.

This movie won't rock your world but it would make for a GREAT rainy day flick.

I agree 100% with everything you just said. They did a fine job with the budget they had for this TV made film. If you're a fan of Corey Haim you will enjoy this goofy action movie from start to finish. Also, what the OP said this is a rainy day or call in to work movie.
